I'M GOING TO BUY A NEW CAMERA & THIS IS WHAT I DESIRE: A CAMERA TO TAKE CLOSE-UP's - It's the lens, not the camera. You can use a macro lens, an extension tube between your lens and camera or a close up lens (filter) on your lens.

FAMILY PORTRAITS, PORTRAITS OF MY CHILDREN, BABY NEPHEWS AND OTHER FAMILY - Any standard, medium telephoto or zoom lens in the range of 50 to 200mm are good for portraitures.

I NEED TO HAVE AF - Almost all 35mm SLRs nowaday have AF capability, except a few manual control cameras. The lower end cameras use the bright white auxiliary light to aid focusing in low light, which is very distracting. The higher end cameras use infra red (either on camera or via external flash).

ABILITY TO SHOT IN LOW LIGHT - Use a faster lens (maximum aperture 2.8 or wider), lens with image stabilizer or vibration reduction, or higher speed film. A tripod with longer exposure will do too, depending on what you are shooting.

WIDLY COMPATABLE WITH OTHER BRANDS - You mean compatable lenses, right? Stick with Nikon, Canon, Minolta or Pentax.

ABILITY TO CONNECT TO FLASH LIGHTING - All those SLRs accept external flash, connect to studio flash via sync cord, wireless transmitter or slave units.

BASICALLY BE ABLE TO TAKE THE PICTURES @HOME LIKE I DID AT STUDIO - Don't know how your studio is set up. But there are alternatives.

I BELIEVE I WORKED W/CANON EOS3 - Eexcellent, excellent camera.

Hope this helps.

Excellent choice, Angela. Just a suggestion. If you are into home or portable studio, use also the Canon's Speedlite flashes. You can use a ST-E2 to control 2 groups of 550EX or 420EX, or a 550EX to control up to 3 groups of 550EX and 420EX flashes. I have a portable studio with the EOS system set up. Works great for me.
