Any in that price range from Canon (Rebel T2 or K2), Minolta (Maxxum 50 or 70), Nikon (N55 or N75), or Pentax (ZX-L) can be had with lens for less than $300. All are very good autofocus SLRs that allow choice of exposure modes from full auto, shutter or aperture priority auto, to full manual.

I agree with Jon,any of the cameras he mentioned will be able to do what you want to do,and I would include the Minolta Maxxum 5 if you could find one.
It is my camera of choice and a Tamron 28-200 lens as my standard lens.
