Choosing a Metz Flash Unit

I have a Canon A1 camera with a hot shoe and a center contact that communicates with a flash unit. My old Metz 193 worked great, but has gone south permanently. I have always liked the Metz units, but would like to know if the newer 54MZ-4 unit will work with this old analog film camera, or would I be better off with another choice. Thanks

  Dan,
The 54 MZ-4 will work fine with it with the proper SCA-300 series module for the A-1 (SCA-310 or the SCA-311 which Metz still makes). All the SCA-3000/3002 units are backward compatible with the SCA-300 modules. The 54 MZ flashes have a number of features of the SCA-3000/3002 system your A-1 cannot use. Not a Bad Thing; just a reminder what you can use is limited by your camera's TTL flash control.

Consider a used 40 MZ-1/MZ-2/MZ-3i also . . . the MZ-2 perhaps being the best match that maximizes features you can use and minimizes extra $$$ for features you cannot use. They haven't been out of production that long, and have the same flash power as the 54 MZ-4. Plus . . . if you ever decide you want to handle mount the flash, you can put a 40 MZ-1/2/3 on a Metz G15 or G16 flash handle. C cells in the handle can power the flash (put the SCA-310/311 on the end of a cord that goes from handle to hot shoe).
