How to choose lenses?
I am currently using a Minolta Maxxum 5 camera with a Tamron 28-200mm lens.Which would be more economical buying a 400mm or larger prime lens or a 1.4x teleconverter? I realize a 2x teleconverter loses two stops of light.

I also own a Maxxum 5 and was looking into the same ideas. I checked into some of the previous threads on teleconverters and everyone's view seems to be that it is better to get a longer lens. It is more economical to get a converter but the idea is that image quality is a lot poorer with them. You might want to check out some of those threads.......just a thought! It helped me make a decision :)

You need to be careful relative to the amount of light that can reach the meter which, if too little, will impact your exposure reading. I have the Tamron 200-400 mm lens and use it to support my Tamron 28-200 mm lens that I use most of the time. This was, and is, a top rated lens. Of course, as with all good things, it's come to an end [i.e., I think it's been replaced by the 200-500 mm.] Check into used equipment sources and/or e-Bay if you find the 2X cuts too much light from your metering system.
