tele-photo lens selection
My wife is a serious amatuer with 2 Nikon 8008 cameras. I would like to buy her a tele-photo lens as a gift. Any ideas for a this type of lens in the price range of 200.00 - 300.00? Thanks much BJ

William, A telephoto lens for the Nikon 8008 could be defined as any lens longer than 50mm. Without knowing your wife's reasons or desires for such a lens makes it very difficult to offer recommendations. However, you can reduce those available lenses to just a very few based on your budget limits ($200-$300). I would opt for a telephoto zoom lens, possibly Nikon's 70-300 AF (I believe it's in the $300 range new). It is a nice lens, will work beautifully with the 8008's, and is a very versatile telephoto lens. I don't think you'll find any better quality OR versatility for the money than the 70-300 Nikon. Recommended in this range are the Nikon 70-300 f/4-5.6 D ED; Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO Macro Super II; and Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 LD 1:2 Macro. Note that Nikon also has a 70-300 f/4-5.6 G version. This is not well suited to the older AF cameras like the N8008. The G lens does not have an aperture ring, the aperture must be set electronically on the camera body. The N8008 does not have such a control. Thus a G lens can only be used in P (full program) and S (shutter priority) modes.

THANKS !!!!!!!!!!! I believe the zoom range you folks have mentioned is exactly what she is looking for. She would use it for landscapes and shooting old buildings. She also likes to shoot birds as the occasion arises.
