Photography Question

First Camera

I would like to purchase a 35mm SLR camera that I could use to learn manual photography that also doubles as a point and shoot for vacation or social situations.

I have tried to do some research on these types of cameras, but it seems like there are tons of them out there.

First off, what are some quality brands/models that I should look for? Secondly, what is an appropriate price range for these different brands/models?

If possible, I would like to spend $250 at most.

Where are the best places to get these cameras online? Ebay?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Nick

Nick, SMILE Photo ( sales@smilephotovideo.com ) has the Nikon FE 10 w/ 35-70mm for $230.00 ( Website:www.smilephotovideo.com ) and Pentax ZX-M for $140.00. They're quite fine manual cameras though you can find a great Nikon FM2N ( either excellent or mint condition ) at the EBAY website. Surf for it and get a superb AIS NIKKOR manual lens to combine with the camera body and you got a killer all-conditions bombproof camera!

I think that I would like to have an auto-focus option (that I could turn off) for situations that I didn't want to spend time focusing.

Did that just put the price of the camera over $250?

Also, I tried smilephotovideo.com and I don't think the web page works anymore.

Thanks,

Nick, sorry I recommended to you a WIP*AS$ website to buy the manual cameras. Anyway, if you want the AF option, there's PLENTY! NIKON N80, N75 are newbie favorites. Not ALL the cameras reach the $250 range ( even WITH the preferred AF lens of YOUR choice! i.e. AF Nikkor, Tamron, Sigma, Tokina ). In Canon, the REBEL GII and KII are all within your price range! Try the CCI Camera City Inc. website ( www.ccicameracity.com )Service Photo ( www.servicephoto.com ), Royal Camera & Video ( www.royalcamera.com )---
