Saving jpeg as tiff to avoid compression

I've read in two books I'm studying that if pics taken using a jpeg format are saved to computer using a jpeg format, then there is the possibility of acquiring artifacts in the image and that each time an image is resaved on the computer as a jpeg file, it is compressed again. To avoid this the authors both recommend changing the format to a tiff file before saving on the computer. Now this seems like a really boneheaded question - but I need more info on how to do this. I utilize a card reader with USB hookup to read my cards and save them to computer. Do I save image by image as a tiff file? Is there any way to save the entire card taken in jpeg as all tiff images when saving them to computer? Thanks again for the help. -K
