How do digital zooms work?

I'm just curious as to how these things work. I don't use mine due to the distortion, but if they are turned on, do they only kick in after the optical zoom length is exceeded or when the digital zoom is on, is the optical zoom
inactive. I can't find anything in my manuals that addresses this question. Thought somebody might know the answer.

Optical zoom is the lens physically/mechanically changes to longer focal length. Optical zoom uses the entire digital sensor and all pixels.

Digital zoom is an electronic crop and enlargement of the central portion of the digital sensor. Because of this there is a loss in pixels and resolution.
