In addition to the EF-S, you can use any Canon EF lens, and any other maker's lens made for the EOS/EF mount.

Some older third party lenses (notably Sigma) have some electronic glitches that keep them from being compatible with the latest EOS camera bodies, but they will update them if you have a problem. See Sigma's statement at http://www.sigma-photo.com/html/pages/faqsb.htm#22

You're in luck! The entire line of EF lenses, including the "L" series will fit on your camera. Which lenses you buy depend on what you're planning to shoot. I have an EOS10D (very similar to your camera) and have 3 lenses that cover just about all my needs. I bought a Canon 28-135 Image Stabilizer lens first. It meets my needs for most types of shots, from closeups to portraits. Next I bought a Canon 75-300 Image Stabilizer lens. That one gives me more "reach". Finally I bought a 17-35 Tamron lens (paid under $300 for it!). I wanted the Canon 17-40 L, but at twice the price I just couldn't justify it. I'll use this lens the least of the three. With these three lenses, I can cover just about any kind of assignment. One thing to remember though is that the actual working length of any lens on your camera will be multiplied by 1.6. That means my 28-135 is actually 44-216. By the way, the Image Stabilizer lenses are well worth the extra money. With the stabilizer on you can hand hold shots you'd need a tripod for with an ordinary lens. Hope this helps you out!
