Using a Polarizing Filter with digital camera

I have a Casio Exlim - Z3 digital camera. I have been using my polaroid sunglasses, just held in front of the lens for the polarized effect. I saw someone holding a coloured filter against theirs not so long ago and was wondering what type of polarizing filter to go for - circular or linear? I know this is a bit crude, but it seems to work!!
Thanks,

Any time you hold something in front of your lens, you need to adjust your exposure time to compensate...(unless your camera has TTL metering, and does this automatically).
Typically, a circular polarizer requires a full stop of additional light when rotated to its maximum level of effect.

If you require polarization to reduce glare on water and other reflective surfaces....instead of holding sunglasses over your lens, try shooting perpendicular to the sun.
Stick out your thumb and index finger to create an "L" shaped right angle.
Point your thumb at the sun, and shoot in the direction your index finger is pointing. Surface glare will be at its least from this angle.

In most cases,..this "rule of thumb" will elimate glare without the need for lens attachments.
