Tips for shooting from the Hot Air Balloon. I hoping to catch a ride in the next week inside a Hot air Balloon over the UAE desert. Any suggestions on the lens choice, do's and dont's is very much appreciated. I have a Nikon D7100 cropped sensor camera and my lenses include from 10 mm fisheye, 11-16 wide, 35m, 100mm, to 70-230mm.

Hi Usman, I took a Hot Air Balloon ride over Cappadocia in Turkey last year. I had two lenses - 1) 24-70 mm and 2) 70-300 mm on my full frame Canon 5D and I found them perfect for that trip. Only problem was I had only one camera body so when I went further up in the air and needed the 70-300mm lens, I had to change the lens - something that I personally don't like to do. From your available lenses, the 70-230mm should be fine but you may need something a bit wider on the higher side of the focal length for your 11-16 mm lens, if you can manage to get it then that will do the job, otherwise you can try the 35mm one. However my suggestion would be and this is what I'll do next time I take a hot balloon ride - carry 2 camera bodies, attach the wide angle lens to one and the telephoto zoom lens onto the other. Ujjwal

Back today from the Arabian Desert. It was great fun, thoroughly enjoyed the morning sun coming out from the distant horizon far away over the desert. You were right Ujjwal, one needs two bodies, but I took two lenses instead and tried to catch the scenes from both. Will be sharing a few images from the hot air balloon ride in the coming week. UB.

Usman, Glad to know you enjoyed the ride and had good weather – that was my biggest worry in Cappadocia after having paid through the nose in advance for that one hour early morning balloon ride. Looking forward to seeing your photos.

Ujjwal that was exactly me feelings before the morning trip. They would not refund any penny if the weather played foul! I have uploaded a couple of images from that ride. Many more yet to be reviewed and processed. I plan to enter a few more in the next month. UB.
