Nikon D4 Just a comment, Nikon has finally announced the brand new model to it's full size sensor lineup. The D4 is now about to supplant the D3 according to the latest newsletter from the Nikonian. Should be available to touch and hold at the upcoming convention :)

Haven't seen anything official on that, but I too would be more interested in a D700 update. The single digit D's are likely to remain forever beyond my price range...A D800 though, maybe I could swing that.

Same here, nothing official just yet. I heard a guidebook had already been printed and ready to roll in September but was recalled due to the damage at the production facilities (flooding) The D800 is the only equipment on my wish list.. Rumor has it (B&H salesperson) it may be anywhere from 24 to 36 mp.

36 mp seems to be the buzz so far, but smaller pixels so a little less sensitive to light. Bu the cameras are o good Hesse days we really don't need to shot at the extremes often

Joe, one of the biggest improvements Nikon has made is in low light sensitivity. The D7000 was a big step in the right direction. The D800 should be on it's own new plateau

I did some looking around and I couldn't find any ISO numbers, I found sites saying 24 mp and 36. Also found a site stating 2/9/12 release date. $4000 for d800 $6000 for the D 4. Either way I am looking for a place to buy that won't charge me sales tax. It's worth a road trip to Nh. Tax rate here is 9.75%. That adds a good chunk to either camera

Joe, Does your state reciprocate with NY on sales tax? I usually get my gear from B&H in NYC. Supposedly most states will require that you pay their local sales tax. I also have a high local tax of 9.75%. I do all my research first.

When you think of the marketing strategy, it was really quite brilliant for Nikon to announce the D4 release first. (I'm sure B&H and others are already taking orders.) Here's how I see this playing out: They'll first weed out many of the impulse buyers who shoot full-frame with the D4...many of whom have been foaming at the bit for upgrades for the top-end Nikons for far too long. After the initial melee, the D800 will appear on the scene (for a few grand less) and will sport features that will appeal more to the advanced-amateur/sem-pro sect. There will likely be waiting lists for both models. I hope, for their sake as well as ours, that their production and distribution departments can keep up!

I live in upstate NY so B&H is required to charge tax. I am looking for a Nikon dealer in NH no sales tax. I hope I can find a dealer that is getting one or 2. I would lie it before May. I am headed to Iceland or 10 days

Check out Abe's of Maine...They don't charge tax if your in NY. Not sure if they are taking preorders for the D4 though. I also live in upstate NY. Nick.

Now for some good news on the D800 release. Could be as soon as Feb 6th or 7th! 36 MP, highest resolution of ANY camera body outside of medium format. Being a landscape photographer, my preference would be both the D800, current D300 or D300 eventual replacement over the D4

Thomas, do you think that 36 MP would make the pixels so small tat they would have less light gathering capabilities. I rented a d3x and its like 24 MP the photos I took with that camera were tack sharp, bright and very nice. I have to see what kind of results 36 mp will produce. I am afraid the pictures may look a little muddy. Joe

I find it odd that Nikon would continue to increase the MP. The Canon 1Dx dropped back to 18MP for better color and still have excellent resolution. Another problem with Super high MP is that there are very few lenses that can resolve all the pixels. It is suprising that they would release the D800 before the D4 since the Nikon using profesional sport photographers are going to be the first to jump to get the D4 for the Summer Olympics. And they want a window of to test the camera first.

Amanda, As regular readers of this column know I am a Canon user. However if the supposed 5DIII comes out with a 30MP+ sensor the reply would be the same. I have done some research, including the articles of the owner of Lenrental, who buys dozens of the same lens at a time as well as several of the new cameras as well as replacing some current cameras. You would be better served keeping your D3 OR purchasing the D4 than the D800. With the 36MP sensor you MUST use the finest Nikon or Zeis lenses since any flaw in you lenses will be magnified and much more apparent. This is especially true at large f stops and even moreso with WA lenses. The only other reason I can think to purchase the D800 is because you WANT it, can afford it, and you love to use photoshop. Is it a good camera? Most definitely. Good luck on your decision?

I just can't seem to get excited about a 36mp camera in 35mm format. I think any serious wedding,fashion or landscape photographer would choose a medium format camera. I certainly don't think the D800 will be suited to action photography. I think there will be a noise issue at high ISO. Maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am, but I certainly won't be the first one to jump in to buy one just to find out. Just my 2 cents. Nick.

The noise is reported to be better than the legendary D3 and D700 sensor. I would say that is quite an achievement.
