blurred photos

Hi,

I have a Nikon D1x that I just bought about a month ago. I love it but I am getting a lot of blurred photos. I have noticed that I get a lot of them when I am taking action shots of kids, dogs, basically anything moving. What am I doing wrong? I have the camera set on auto, so it is supposed to adjust everything for me. I am sorry this is such a dumb question but it has been bugging me as to why they are coming out blurred. Thank you so much for your help.

Michelle

Well, your first mistake is to let the camera do everything for you. If you don't know how to meter yourself then there are a few things you can do. First of all, put the camera in shutter priority mode and choose the highest shutter speed the camera will allow for the light present. Or, set the camera to aperture priority and open the aperture all the way so the camera chooses the fastest possible shutter speed. If these things don't solve your problem then set the ISO higher and try again.

I totally agree with Jeff K. However, I would also add:
The D1X is a very complicated camera with more bells and whistles than the Flying Scotsman. So, your first priorty is to read and understand the manual. That done, whenever possible, always use a good tripod.

Allow me to emphasize my first point. It is very important to understand exposure especially with a digital camera. The exposure latitude of digital is very similar to slide film in that you don't have a lot of room for error. Therefore, it is vital to understand and master exposure unless you want to spend all your time shooting-previewing-deleting-and reshooting.
