Photography Question

Ray Bilcliff

picture.com photo contest

I am another who fell for the competition at picture.com and my nomination as the Photographer of the Year Award 2004 and being chosen as one of the 45 who will get to speak about my photograph. I know that my photo was very good and quite unique in it's content and so I made reference to the nomination on my web site because I was proud of it. Now I feel foolish as I bragged to my friends about the nomination. My question is. Is it a fraud? I think that everyone who sent in a picture has reached the semi final... that is not possible of course under the rules of any competition. BUT will there be a winner of the $5000 first prize and are there realy $25,000 in prizes to be awarded in Washington. My suspicions are aroused because I have not been able to contact anyone from picture.com and I am shocked to learn about the deception with the guest speakers. There must be a lawyer/photographer out there who will look into this. my website is www.7milediver.com and my proud announcement is on my front page. Maybe I will leaveit there for a bit longer and see what happens. If I get no response from picture.com my message on the front page will be a warning to all who read it. Ray

I too was nominated. Sounds so good! Have you found anything out yet? In fact, if you have the time please tell me all you know. I never heard anything about the guest speakers, what deception? Lori

Hi Lori sorry to have taken a while to respond. What I have heard about the guest speakers is that most of the names on the list will not be there. NG has said they want nothing to do with it. A lawyer friend has said that in his oppinion If they [picture .com] pay out the prize money that they have announced then it is not fraud. Guest speakers at other events have been known not to turn up. At worse it is unethical and misleading to inflate the value of the prizes. eg it is unlikely that the silver vase is $200 and the camera you would get is not $300 I found it at $125 and if they also have the function in Washington then they can claim to be helping photographers. You would also get your photo in the book even if you have to pay for it to be included. All in all it would seem that you view it which ever way you want to. In answer to all the people who send in photos been nominated as photographer of the year well it seems that only 45 have been selected, at least that is what my invitation said and I was one of them. I will not be going but only because it is to expensive to do it from Grand Cayman where I live, If I lived in Washington I would of been there and I would of viewed the $600 as money for entertainment and maybe education if they have workshops. keep in touch. Ray

Thanks for the information Ray. I have decided not to attend also. I really wanted to go, but I live in Ohio and would rather buy a new digital with the $600 I would spend on the convention. I also was nominated and told I was 1 of 45. I was so excited..... then got worried it might be a fraud, so I started searching for anything about the convention and got lead to this forum. Thanks for the reply. Lori

If you read more carefully, it states that you will speak about your photo but it is later where the no.45 is mentioned. 45 will share in the prizes but that has nothing to do with speaking about your achievements. I imagine everyone in attendence will get their 2 mins of fame, if that, but that is all. More has been read into this letter than is actually stated, so they are free and clear legally.
