Taking Pictures of Small Animals and Birds

I have a 35mm with a zoom lens but when I take pictures of small animals and birds the distance I can get is too far for the lens to get a clear picture.

I'm gonna assume that when you say you have a 35mm that 35mm is the film format you are using. But if that's the size of your lens then that would definitely explain why you can't zoom in far enough. Have a close look at your lens it would say something like 35mm-80mm or 50mm-210mm or 35mm-50mm. You need a lens that's at least 100mm(ish) to get decent bird pictures from a distance. Write back with more info about your lens and I (or someone else) should be able to help you out.

I would even go further and say you need at least a 300-400mm lens to get in tight on wild birds.

The focal length needed will depend some on the size of the birds.
:-)
For larger birds such as ducks, swan, geese, etc., 300mm will work well. For small birds such as cardinals, bluejays, etc., 500 or 600mm would not be unusual. These lenses can be very, very expensive. Toward the less expensive end are the "mirror" lenses which are shorter and lighter than a glass super telephoto. They are a compromise though. They have a fixed aperture and the "bokeh" (what out of focus areas in the image look like) can contain donuts instead of circles if there are point highlights in the out of focus areas of the image.

Well, you're format doesn't matter really. If you get a decent zoom lens (200mm) you should be able to zoom right in on those birdies. It can at the same time make your quality go down though. good luck
