What macro lens should I buy?
I'm a beginner with a Canon SLR camera and I have a 75-300 zoom. Looking for recommendations for a macro lens... would Canon's 50mm compact macro or 100mm macro (with USM) be better? Thanks.

Take a look at Sigma's lenses. The 105mm EX with macro is a top choice. Sigma lenses are heavier in some cases and are built tough. Their prices and quality lure in a lot of pro's. The 50mm Sigma EX also rates very highly in optics qualities, as well. Stay with the EX series.

Canon's 50-mm macro is useful not only as a macro, but as a 50-mm lens, for scenics, still-lifes, and portrait, if not up too close. With the Canon, you could own one lens that you can be sure offers the best resolution possible. Nothing against Sigma; Canon just makes great macro lenses. I have a Vivitar 90-mm macro and find it less useful because the depth of field is so shallow. OTOH, a 90 to 105 macro allows you to get farther back from your subject, and doubles as a short telephoto.
