Photography Question

Anyone using a Canon EOS3/550EX flash?

I have recently began using the Canon EOS3 with a 550EX flash. Probably a little more camera than what I needed but I am hoping to grow into it. Is there anyone out there using either or both of these that is willing to be a mentor? I would call myself an advanced beginner or beginning ameture. Thanks so much!!!

I have a similar EOS camera with 550EX except that my camera does not have eye control focusing. Although I am not pro, but we can exchange ideas. What questions do you have? BTW, do you have the 550EX manual. It is very important to 'study' it a bit. Also if possible, pick up the brochures from Canon, especially the one titled "Flash Work" and the one for your camera. They have good information and samples how your camera and flash work together.

Thanks for getting back to me, Andy. You must have thought I disappeared. I have so many questions that I don't even know where to begin. I have had the EOS 3 for only a couple of months. I am overwhelmed actually. I wish I could find a class specifically for this system or spend time with someone one on one to show me. Manuals are often frustrating. To be honest, I am afraid to ask questions on line due to others thinking I must be an idiot. In reading some of the other Q & A's, most of you seem to way over my head or at least where I want to be someday. Up until now I have done everything in AF/P mode, letting the camera decide everything for. I understand much of what I read until I go to actually shoot something. I get nervous and frustrated. I mostly shoot child portraits or pictures of people anyway. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks for your time!!

I have and Elan 7e and a 550Ex. Except for soom test shoots I actually haven't used the flash. But in the twoo monthes I had the Elan I shot the heck out of it. Over a decade ago I did weddings with the 620 and some of the older EOS series lens. From what I remember from back then for portraits with the 550EX you will want to soften the light. Bounce it off a white surface of through a difuser/softbox ( a thin white cloth held in front of it works in a pinch). If you have to hand hold the camera, (doing tables at a wedding) get a off camera light bracket. This will move the flash from directly in front of the subject, eliminate red-eye and produce less flat subjects. With EOS you will need the off camera flash cord II about fifty dollars. Ebay and Adorama are about the same. 'I'm looking to pick one up'. Nice camera though, I espicially like the fact you can change focusing screens. Really helpful if you shot maual in low light. My elan doesn't change screens but the 620 does.
Actually most of my shots are AF/P mode as well. The most important part of photography is seeing the picture and getting it in the view finder and then getting it on film. After you take your pictures look at them, study them, ask yourself what could of made them better. Was the shutter to slow, not enough light, to much, to close , to far, and such. Once you see a pattern that needs improvement just focus on the first improvement need. Is it you or the 'camera' if it's the camera then look up in the manual on how to get, 'more light on subject, or less light or faster shutter speeds or what ever it is. Tackle one hurdle at a time. I'm willing to bet, at least for me it's true, that the pro's don't use all the features of the pro cameras. Each photography has his niche and uses those features he/she needs.

I hope this wasn't to basic or missed what you asked for.

Let me know
