Photography Question

B&W and mercury vapor!.How come?

I have heard about this pro photographer who used to take pics of well known old jazz musicians in New Orleans long time ago(watched at PBS channel), and he mentioned that at some point when He was developing some B&W pics (don't know if developing film or on the printing process), said He used to use mercury vapors!...

Just wondering how could you do something like that (I also heard mercury vapors are highly toxic, to the point of killing you if you smell it)!..So how this process works?.. I supose a special receptacle or sealed container is the one the developer uses, but how?...

The greys, blacks and the in between tonal ranges are amazingly perfect!...

Just wondering!..Thank you for your insights before hand!...

Mercury Vapor is used in printing Platinum prints, to the best of my knowledge (see question below regarding platinum).
