Minolta pro-level digital slr? Hi, does anyone know if Minolta is coming out with a pro-level digital slr that is comparable to Canon and Nikon? If so, anytime in the near future?

If you haven't surfed the www.minolta.com site for Digital SLR cameras recently, the current models listed are the DiMage 7Hi, DiMage 7i, and the DiMage 7, etc. Are you just researching? I've owned 3 Minoltas [Zoom 2,Maxxum 450si, & Maxxum 5]and Nikon Coolpix 995 [digital, but not SLR]. Personally, I would recommend Canon or Nikon over Minolta any day, probably will never buy another Minolta, but that's just me. I LOVE my Nikon digital, will wait for prices to come down on digital SLRs to upgrade someday. Recently took www.gapweb.com class, many classmates had Canon D30/D60s, most impressive.

The most recent release by Minolta is the Digital Maxxum 5D. It is a lesser expensive model to their release they made last year the Maxxum 7D. I have the 7D and I really love it. I do not think it's considered pro-level but I really like it. I chose it because I already had a Maxxum film slr so I could use all of my accessories for both. I have heard many good things about Nikon and Canon both and was just about to purchase the Canon Digital Rebel when I saw the 7D information. You can read about all of it's specs and features at their website!

I don't have a minolta digital slr, but I do have a Minolta Maxxum 7 film slr, and I can't say enough good about this camera. I would have bought the 7D in a heart beat if it would have came out sooner, but I couldn't wait so I got the Nikon D70. I'm sure that Minolta will come out with a pro level digital slr, I just don't know when.

Dee H back again! I have had the Nikon D70 DSLR camera for over a year, now,& it is fantastic. I feel like my digital dreams have come true. Loads better than the Coolpix 995 for most tasks, but a wee bit heavier. Still light in comparison to the Minolta 7D, but that is because of the image stabilization built into the 7D's body. So, John Q, have you bought anything since last we heard from you???

John: You can find rumors on the Web about a pro level Maxxum 9D. But is it likely? I would guess no .. not in the near future. But, there are two major trade shows coming up, CES and PMA, between now and February. Check the daily News items at www.dpreview.com A lot of new cameras will be announced in the next 60 days. Peter when you say Maxxum 9D you are meaning Digital right??? I think this would be the answer to my dilemma so I hope you are right . . . but although Minolta can pop out digital P&S on a regular basis they don't seem to be keeping up in the DLSR arena... I'm wanting to get a backup body but just hate to go with something that is the "same" and would rather upgrade and use the old for the backup .. . soooooooo hearing even rumors about a 9D is making my stomach dance with butterflies LOL

Michelle: Yes, the Maxxum 9D would be a pro level digital SLR. But it's only a vague rumor. They never sold many of their pro 35mm cameras (Maxxum 9) ... the market for a pro Digital SLR is tiny as well. Logically, they should not make one. But who knows?? (I certainly have no info.) Peter

Thanks Peter.. . I went to DPreview and read the comments. . . sounds like it is a long time coming even if it does happen . .. not sure I can wait that long so I may just end up with another 7D as a backup . . you have the 7D is that right??? If so are you liking it and finding that it meets your needs?

Michelle: I don't own a 7D but I did test it and worked with one for two months. www.shutterbug.net/test_reports/0305konica/index.html And wrote a book about it: Magic Lantern Guide to the Maxxum 7D I guess the question is ... is it meeting YOUR needs? If you had a Wish List, what would it include. i.e. I wish this camera would .... Cheers! Peter Burian, Instructor
