  Or yes this would be the other (easier) way to do it. Make your background color black or dark gray, then change your canvas size to what you need. :)

  Sometimes changing the canvas size results in a better photo. You maintain the image subject size but trim away unnecessary background from the top or sides.

  Yes, I would actually add canvas to bring the photo to the appropriate ratio. Just use black or white - I think being consistent is most important. I do this all the time when I want to print an image I've cropped to a 4:5 ratio (8x10) in a 2:3 ratio (4x6) which is standard postcard size. I just add a "border" to either the top and bottom or to the sides.
