New badge design

I think I'm diggin' the new "badge" design I spotted here tonight... Very clean and legible, restrained and uncluttered; no more "medallion" look...

Interesting..I'll have to take the opposite view point...I liked the old ones better...the gold and the silver. They hadn't changed in the 10+ years I've been with BP. Now, upon first glance there's just a bunch of rectangles below the photos. Life will go on..it's just a button. But I still like the old ones better. :-)

I wholeheartedly agree with Ken; these badges make little distinction between awards and I think that that cheapens the awards. Plus, I don't think they are pleasing to the eye; they are ugly in my opinion! I hope this design is temporary - Please!!!

I am reproducing the comment I made on the other thread here....

I am not sure what the reasons were for the need to change the look of all badges, but if the intent was an improvement over the previous one, Jim, it has definitely failed big time!! Just my two cents.

Sorry Chris, but I have to agree with the others...I like the old ones much better. I guess the new ones don't take up as much room. Maybe Jim is going to make it so we can post bigger images and fit more on each page of our galleries?

Very unimpressive. Until I read this thread I thought the boxes were just placeholders while maintenance/upgrades were being made. I never thought the boxes were intended to replace award looking badges.

Let me jump on the band wagon of not liking these strange boxes! It takes time to figure out what is what, where the old badges had a very distinct look for each stage of the contest and was quickly recognizable! Sorry, big fail Jim!

Interestingly, on my chrisbudny.com site, the old badges still show. Its only when I'm "on BP pages" that I see the new ones, so far...

I think I'd definitely prefer the new ones on my black-background chrisbudny.com site -- I find the new ones would fit far better with the look of that website (the medallion version has always displayed in a white rectangle, against my black background, which I don't much care for) vs. the old medallion style. (And in contrast to an earlier post, I've often felt the medallion style always looked a bit "cheesy" on my more formal black gallery layout...!)

But I do agree the new style, on a white BP page (I no longer have a basic / white gallery) is a bit jarring.

I do not like this new badge on a white background. On gallery pages with white backgrounds, I find the new badge very distracting and a little to bold which makes my eye travel to the badge instead of the photo.
Place the new badge on a dark background it becomes less distracting and does not take my eye from the photo.
Guess what I am saying is the old badge worked on all backgrounds, the new one. not so much.

When I was just beginning photography, I would browse the BP site and was blown away by the gold EP badges. I wanted to have one, too. I do not like the new ones. They look generic and not special at all. PLEASE go back to the way things were. Change for the sake of change is not always for the good.

I just got an email about "The All Time Best Photos". Could it be that these "Best" photos will have the badges we used to have? Again, I don't like it. I was looking for my gold badge winner for January and could not find it because the badge is now just another rectangle with gold letters.

These current badges (and I hope they are a temporary glitch) really detract from the photographs. The black rectangles are quite jarring. They goal of award badges should be, in my opinion, a way to highlight the photographs and show them off to their best. These black badges do just the opposite. If they stay, I will no longer be sending my friends to this site to see my work. Please, please, bring the old classy badges back!

Please bring back the medals! The new badges kill the classy look of my gallery. At the very least, please allow us to chose the version we want to use. I won't want people to see my work on BP at all if these tab things are the definitive solution.

My take on the new badges is negative. First and foremost BP is a prestige contest. There are no awards other than the aesthetics and peer recognition, unless you of course haul in the grand prize. Which is elusive to the majority of us. So, when we do receive an award it is a source of pride from the editor's choice to the win. If your going to change the contest perhaps that works. But psychologically speaking, there is little to receiving an award that looks like an editors choice. Allen

I wonder if there are plans in progress to change the standard background from white to black? I ask this partially due to the new badge design (hate it!) and partially because all of my followed links are showing up white this morning (which is very hard to see on a white background!).

Thank you, Chris, for bringing up this question.

I of course agree with you: I like the cleaner, streamlined look and find it more professional.

But I appreciate the feedback on the winner badges, and can appreciate that many of you want more of the distinct GOLD look on the upper awards and the maybe flashier look on all badges, including the Editor's Picks.

Yes, we did change the size and look, and there's no option to switch to the old style currently. We had to make a change for many reasons.

One of the reasons was to "make room" for the new badges for the ALL-TIME WINNERS :)

However, hearing your feedback, I may try a few different things, and see if we can come up with a new look that most people enjoy.

Here's a question:

Would you mind a more round badge? less rectangular?

What's your vote?

In the meantime, thanks again for your feedback - it's in our consideration.

I'll keep you posted if we are able to come up with a compromise that most people like.

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for this response, Jim. It is much appreciated that you listen and take the members' feedback into consideration.
Here's my two cents (thanks for asking!): My main objection is that, against a white background, the black badges are very in-your-face ... as someone else mentioned, they are the first place your eye goes to, and they overwhelm the actual photos. In addition, the strong font in all-caps makes them look a bit like they are shouting. The various badge levels (EP, SF, Finalist, etc.) do all look pretty much alike ... not much distinction at a casual glance. I'm not sure I mind that very much; the larger issue for me is that the badges command more attention than the photos.
Is it possible that you could present some alternate badge designs and gather feedback via survey (like you did for the new logo)? Just an idea ...
Again, thank you for asking!
Peggy

Ah thanks for your response, Peggy.

I now see that the biggest issue is that these new ones steal attention when against the white backgrounds of your gallery.

I know that there are a few other minor issues - font, and distinction... but...

What if the background of the Gallery changed to black or gray?

We are working on a new, mobile-friendly Gallery that will at least offer darker colors (because photos usually look much better against a dark gray or black background).

I wonder: what if the Gallery background changes, and we do a couple other things to make each level more distinct?

Jim, can you revert back to the old style badges for monthly contest, and have a new set of emblems for the "all time" badges? Kinda like what you did with the Cash Contest years ago.

I think vast majority of members like current look of the badges. They have not changed in the 10 years I've been on BP. It's kinda like a signature for BP. Let's keep the same signature and something different for all time. And nice idea on the all time selections. You will have a tough time culling them down :-)

Thank you very much for responding, Jim! It’s greatly appreciated. Here what I would like to see:

1. Black (maybe dark gray) background.
2. More round (less rectangular) badge.
3. NOT all-caps font.
4. Some distinction between badge levels (at least between EP’s and Finalist’s). After all, there is a huge difference between them.

Thanks in advance.

I think Ken's idea is great. Why not have completely new badges for the All Time Best photos. If anything, it was mentioned that perhaps the old badges could be more round. I don't think it matters about the background. I, personally, think that the current rectangles with large letters will be "in your face" no matter what the background is. I know that the task of keeping a website updated or adding more features must be daunting. If the change is better, then I am all for it but the changes in the badges are not better. I really, really dislike the new look.

Thanks, Jim, for listening to the members. I think the new badges are distracting. I don't care about the shape, only think they are a bit too large. I would like to see the gold and silver colors reinstated, and the word "winner" brought back to the second place and above badges. I believe the photos look best with a gray background.

I thought I would add my two cents worth. I don't like these new badges at all. There is little to distinguish an editors pick from a finalist or 1st/2nd place win whereas the old badges stood out in that regard. When I look at my gallery now all I see is black. They are not pleasing to the eye at all.

I'd still like to see our old badges back for all of the reasons already mentioned. They were cleaner and more professional looking, and easy to distinguish between the level of awards. Also, they are smaller so that our photos are what you see first. A choice on background colors would be great, with the old style badges. The silver and gold will look great on a black or gray background!

The background on my gallery is gray. The rectangle badges my not be quite as jarring as those on a white background but I still think they are ugly. I'd choose to turn them off if I could. Far too distracting, I think they cheapen the look of our galleries. Smaller ovals might be better but best would be to get the old look back.

Hi Jim, Thanks for sharing your perspective. Oh, well , if this is the intended change then all I can say I agree to all the voices that are against it because it doesn’t look good, let alone any improvement in visual appeal . Biggest issues ? - the black, rectangular badges! If making room was the main consideration, you can consider reducing the sizes of the badges that we had before and may be introduce some changes for the new category of Winners.

I just cruised through most of the gallery owners who commented on this thread. Several photographers do already have a black background and the badges do not look any better. Interestingly Usman has a golden-yellow background so his numerous winning photo badges look okay with the gold letters as the color compliments his background.

Thanks for listening and acting, Jim. The latest look is an improvement, but still not ideal in my opinion. The badges definitely look much better against a black or dark gray background. They look a tiny bit better now against the white background, but still don't look very good ...

Someone else mentioned this as well ... After clicking on a link it turns white, so it becomes invisible against a white background. I can find them because I have clicked on them many (many!) times, but perhaps they wouldn't be so easy for others to find.

I would fully support making my gallery background black or dark gray, in fact, I prefer that, and it would solve both the badge and link problem for me.

Thanks again!

However I don't understand why the winner and finalist badges are still surrounded in black? Also the Photo of the Day is still rectangular and holds no esthetic appeal.   Hi all

The celebration continues with more progress...

The team was able to figure out a way to keep the old look, and fix some of the problems they were trying to fix, AND make room for the All-Time Best contest.

If you still see black backgrounds, etc. it's a work in progress. Give them an hour and check again. After an hour or so, do let me know if you still see things that look wrong.

Also, the white visited links... yes that is another thing the team is working on fixing. The fun never ends (good thing they love what they do).

Stay tuned...

'Tis all good Jim; no worries... your design choice for the "contest result indicators" (to name them generically!) -- whether old medallion style or new 'box frame' style -- doesn't matter to me personally, that much...
I liked the elegant typeface presentation, less-is-more, feel of the new design (particularly when black is set as a whole-gallery background); yet the old skeuomorphic medallions remain comfy and familiar.

Hmmm. For me, the "old" EPs are completely back, and the other badges are half-way back ... the old badges are there, but they are still surrounded by a black rectangle.

Nikki, looking at your gallery, I see no EPs on page one, and on page two and subsequent pages, I see EPs that look like the old ones ...

I wonder if we are seeing interim phases (for lack of a better word), as they work on this.

I think I'll stop watching the pot while it's trying to boil, LOL!

My bad, Peggy. I think what I saw was the badge for the first round of the "Big Contest". It is gold and oval and looks like a Winner badge BUT it says "All Time Editor's Pick" on it - I thought the old EP badges had changed, but now I think now.

The new gold Editor's Picks badges (that have 1 star in the upper left) indicate...

... that photo is has passed the first test for the ALL TIME BEST contest.

Yes, it's begun!

Keep an eye on the site because these All Time Best EPs will be appearing like crazy over the next days (hopefully not weeks). But there are so many great photos to go through!!!

The Classic Gallery page badges are still being worked on.

Let the fun continue...

Love ya,
Jim

Jim, do the new All-Time EPs show up on our galleries, under the thumbnail of the photo? Or are they only visible when I click on the photo? I'm seeing one of the new EPs below a full-size photo, but the new EP badge doesn't appear below the thumbnail of my basic gallery. Good luck with the judging...I don't envy you going through thousands of gold medals. :-)

Thanks, Jim for the changes, its already looking much better, I still see the black boxes as background to the Winner badges though ( winner badges have regained the old look - many thinks again!) ...........assuming it’s still work in progress and those will soon disappear.
Also, I see the new Gold EP badges appearing on some of my photos from very recent to as old as 2013 - so you have managed to put this on fast-track already! :-) Cheers!!

  You're welcome! :) :) :)

(you may have seen this in another forum thread but if not...)

Classic Gallery Owners:

I have a Quick Question for you

It's about our Gallery update... we need to change the gallery to play nice with Google and all those millions of people viewing from a phone or tablet. (Can you believe it but desktop computers are being used less and less each day?)

So would please take a moment to take my quick poll?

Thanks!
Jim

I believe the rectangle behind the badges is actually dark gray. When viewed on a white background the box is quite evident. When viewed on a gray background (like on the page you see when commenting) then the box blends into the background and is invisible.

Perhaps the future plan for gallery's is a gray background instead of white.

I like that plan.

  Hi everyone,

Okay here's a quick update...

WE HAVE NEW MOBILE-FRIENDLY GALLERIES!

YES!

You may have heard me mention how Google has been pushing everyone to go to mobile-friendly pages because the trend is that viewers are now visiting pages via smartphones and tablets. Even though you might still use a desktop computer to do your photo work, most of the world is going to mobile devices.

It's been a long project, but we are now officially launched!

With the new design, Google will continue to give your gallery good search engine rankings, and more people will have a better experience viewing your photos.

Many BetterPhoto members also requested dark background options; the new galleries offer that as well.

Here is a quick video that gives a tour of the new galleries:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0WJwPBSOyc

In the video, I show you how, when you hover over an image or click the "View Details" link, you'll see any CONTEST BADGES too!

Yay again!!! :)

If you miss certain features, please feel free to email us with "Gallery Wishlist" in the subject line of the email and we will gather all requests. We cannot promise that we will be able to offer every feature, but if enough people vote and there is a possible solution in this new mobile-friendly format, we will do our best to deliver.

Go check out your new Classic Gallery, if you have one... and get one if you don't ;-)

Thanks,
Jim

P.S. If you're like most of us and change can be hard, please email me privately at the Support email or... be nice in the forum. Do unto others as you would them comment on your own creative work.

And if you love the new look, please help others adjust in any way you can.

This change is a huge improvement over what we had... and now many more millions of people will be able to enjoy and appreciate your beautiful photography.

Have fun!

  Irene,

I noticed that in testing too and, unfortunately, we have not yet been able to figure out a work around for that problem.

It happens mainly when you click on the image (not the "View Details" link) and start a slide show, or view the large slide-show-like version.

My advice is to click the "View Details" link and comment there, then go back.

In fact, the tech team could make it so the "View Details" link goes directly to the enlargement version at BetterPhoto, where you leave comments.

The background color of that page will look different than your previous pages of your Gallery (if you're using a black or white background)... but the user will be able to directly comment on your image.

Even the 'ugly' badges were better than NO badge!!! I'm having the same problem as Irene and Bob - plus I can't find the support link to to email Jim - just a help link which is totally unhelpful as it only addresses one issue. Anybody?   I don't know what problems were solved by the changes. Occasionally, when I was away from home, I used my phone or tablet to look at BP. I never had any problems in the past.

Now, depending upon orientation of device and photo, the pictures don't maintain aspect and are distorted. A landscape photo viewed on a portrait oriented device is squished to fit the narrow screen. A portrait photo viewed on a device held horizontally is stretched to fill the wider screen.

You have to keep rotating the device for pictures to look correct.

Irene and Bob - thanks for the feedback... these are issues the team is working on... I will let you know.

Irene, I know: the pages looked good on my iPhone too. But that is just because some mobile devices are really good at displaying web contest in a tiny duplicate of what people see on a desktop. They still weren't what the tech world and Google call "mobile-friendly". For one thing, a mobile-friendly site responsively changes to better accommodate smaller devices. On my iPhone, the site would look good but things like links would be so tiny it would be hard to click on them.

So the true mobile-friendly is responsive and Google-approved... we just have to work out a few bugs, like that image thing when you go to the enlarged detail page.

This is just a small thing, but would it be possible to put the "page numbers" or a "next" button at the bottom of the page? When I'm looking at a page and scroll to the bottom there is no where else to go. I have to scroll back up to the top to find the page numbers to click on. I know... picky, picky, right?

Lookin' good, Jim ... great progress so far! Thanks to you and your team for your hard work!
I have two questions/comments:
1) I assume you've tested with various devices/brands, but my gallery will not load on my Samsung Galaxy. It's not the latest model, but it's not ancient, and the previous gallery could load.
2) I'm happy to say that I've received a few of the new "All Time" editors picks, but they have replaced the previous badges on those photos. So if that's as far as they go in the All Time contest, will I get the previous Second Place (or whatever) badge back? I'd rather have an "old" Second Place than an "all time" EP. Or both would be great, if that's the plan.
Thanks again!

Jim, I commented on the other thread about the new style, but many more folks are on this thread. I can now do a right-mouse click, Save As, to download any photo to my hard drive. Before, if I did a right mouse click, the BP interface would say the photo could not be downloaded. I"m not sure if you're aware of this. I realize Facebook and other sites allow others to save images. And maybe that's the way it will be with the new site. Just not sure if that's the intent, or if others know that anyone can download their photos.

...also, while viewing some friends' galleries on my iPad mini retina, when I rotate the device from portrait to landscape or vice-versa, the layout of gallery thumbnails gets seriously messed up...
Do love that black background however (no surprise since my BP website is black), and the slightly larger (I think) thumbnails than I recall from before, when browsing others' galleries...

Being that I've been a computer programmer/mgr for 25 years before just retiring, I have some specific page design issues that I noticed regarding both the layout of the Photo Manager page as well as the personal Gallery page in regards with how it is handling the display of the new All Time Medallion as well as the regular medallions.

Is there a way to write to Jim privately to explain these specific issues, or must I explain them here. They are style (look and feel) related problems (and don't affect how site works).

Thanks

When you click a thumbnail (not the "View Details" hover-link) you see a much larger display version of the image -- but what is displayed is a noticeably machine-upsized version of the original 800px display image -- and like all upsizing (which must invent and insert new pixels from thin air, to make a larger image) these upsized display versions in the new gallery format are all dramatically softer, visibly pixelated in areas, etc. (When you click the "View Details" hover-link, you get the old, traditional crisp 800px BP image presentation, along with traditional right-click blocking.)

The upsized/soft/pixelated view (and I suspect, upsized entirely by your browser's programming, not by BP directly; but I'm speculating) currently has right-click-save enabled. But note -- when you actually right-click save that, what you get on your C: drive is again, the traditional 800px BP display image; not the upsized (and badly softer) version.

Right-click-save blocker is a false security -- maybe nice as a reminder to viewers about copyright/intellectual property rights; but even that is questionable... Anyone who wants to lift your BP image from the screen will do it, simple as that. One keystroke will grab any BP image. (Or any image displayed anywhere on the web today---but at BP, a right-click-save-as yields the 800px display size. If doing a screengrab of the enlarged view at BP, you get the enlarged, softer, invented-pixels image - somewhere around 1400px on my monitor.)

ie, right-click-save-as is not pulling the *source file* which you initially uploaded to BP, such as if you just happened to have originally loaded a 4,000px file size, which BP then shrunk to display size 800px. Right-click-save-as, and screen-grabbing, gets you that 800px.

And so what? -- the 800px image result is all but worthless for any printing or wallpapering, except perhaps on the older, smaller iphone displays, etc.---but even the iphone4 would still have to machine-upsize your 800px image, to fill the iphone's 960px screen! Folks have been able to lift your 800px BP images forever. Nothing has changed in that regard, with or without right-click blockers. The absence of right-click saving is not worth the worry that somehow your BP images are now more at risk without it -- the images have been, still are, and will always remain utterly (and easily) "liftable", at all times, as long as they are displayed anywhere online.

Now, if BP reaches the stage where larger-pixel-count upload files *are* displayed natively (instead of the current 800px display max) --- say, you can upload a polished 1600px or 2400px file, and then exactly that file is used by BP to display in its full resolution... well, then a screengrab by someone starts to yield much more "useable" results for printing, for large screen wallpaper, etc. (And that would be the point, in my opinion, where you'd want a more "intrusive" copyright logo splashed across the face of the image.)

But at the 800px display size, I'd never give "image-saving risk" another passing thought... and certainly, abandon the notion that right-click-block is a valid security measure of any real significance.

Harriett, I'm not certain that Chris is saying the image is worthless. He's just saying that at 800 pixels, it's fairly small, especially for printing. I wasn't aware BP (or my browser) was generating a larger, softer rendition from my uploaded 800 pixel version. Thanks, Chris for the heads up.

I meant for printing and maybe my choice of words were not the best. Every photo has value to the photographer. It is just that I am relieved that quality prints from these small versions would be difficult. However, although I used one of my own from my gallery, I can put anyone's photo as the background on my laptop. Has it always been this way? I am not a computer person.

Hi Harriet -- yep, any image you can pull off the web, from any website, you could then go set as your wallpaper... if the image file is smaller (in pixel dimensions) than your screen's actual pixel size, Windows/Mac can stretch the image in either direction to fit, edge to edge -- which of course degrades the visual quality somewhat in the process (particularly noticeable around sharpness/crispness). So if I save (or screen grab) your Mission San Juan image, I get it as an 800x532 pixel jpg... My work laptop has a 1366x768 pixel display -- so setting the grabbed file to become my wallpaper, will make Windows stretch it to fill the 1366x768. Your original file has 425,000 pixels; Windows would have to render the image at 1,049,000 pixels to fill my screen, inserting 620,000 new pixels in the process; that process can't truly match the visual end result, of starting out from a camera original-size file and reducing down to 1366x768... But it may give acceptable results to someone who doesn't care as much about image quality.

After the stretching/upsizing, I can see a pronounced softening in the result (though, the image is still clearly the recognizable Mission building...) Someone who wasn't a photographer might not care that they have that softer/mushy image as their wallpaper, I suppose; the softness would personally drive me crazy -- especially since I already knew your original 800px image posted to BP was crisp!

I'm not saying that machine-upsizing does a terrible job, and so who cares -- it can give very passable results, when done proficiently. But in the end, I'm comfortable with the "built-in safety net" that arises because BP currently only displays at 800px. If someone wants to lift my 800px image from BP, and carefully upsize it a few times, they could get to a file size jpg that was sufficient for printing a modest print size; we are all powerless to prevent that from happening, for anything we ever post online.

So basically yes, since the dawn of web browsers, screen grabs have been available to anyone; our images at BP (or anywhere online) have been "grabbable" and thus able to be set to wallpapers.

Irene - If I mouse over an image with a gold badge all I see is the all time editor's pic. Same thing when clicking the image to open it. Its not until I click on view details that I see all badges.

Also - I can't access anyone's galleries on my phone including mine. All I see is a blank black page with the circling icon going round and round. Why is this happening when this is supposed to be mobile friendly? I never had any problems accessing my gallery before.

I love the new look of our galleries and the option to use a dark background. The "My Contest Winners" is really nice too!
Is anyone else having problems opening their galleries on an iPhone though? I use the iPhone 5s and my photos won't open, I just get the busy circle. I had my hubby check on his iPhone 6 and my images open fine on his??

My new gallery has a black background and I like that aspect of it. But I didn't "choose" that. Where do we get an option? If there's a choice, I'd like to try the choices before making a final selection. And I'm still hoping for more space around the images. I really dislike the "puzzled" look that the galleries currently have.

Melinda, if you go to the "Pancakes" - My BetterPholio - Gallery Settings, you'll find some background color options. I hope it helps.

I am using the iphone 4 and have yet to be able to load my galley. Just the top of the page loads, no pictures. Also, when viewing my gallery on my PC, I noticed that there are two GALLERY buttons at the top of the page. Both lead to my gallery. I noticed as well that when I click on a photo to view the larger version, the titles of the photos are covered by the badges. Just wanted to share my experience.

Were all of you able to load the old gallery? I could on my LG. I have not tried the new look yet but will.

Then,.....why the need to change? I do like most of the new features of the new BP look but not all of them. I don't access from my phone much so this was never an issue. I could always get BP on my laptop when I traveled, so this was not an issue. Who were these changes aimed for? Social media? Seems as if social media is ruling the world.

I do like the way the gallery photos show in the new format. In my opinion an improvement. Thanks Jim. If you are taking suggestions, I have a few ideas that can make the new look more user friendly.

Is it possible to add a link at the bottom of the gallery page so that one can move forward to the next page or another page without scrolling back to the top of the gallery?

Seconds, I see that the EP on PTD ae now visible in the Photo Manager page. Can you also include the finalist awards. This would help us from mistakenly deleting an awarded photo from our gallery.

Lastly, in the photo sort, it would be nice if we could move blocks of photos as opposed to moving one photo up and down in the Photo Sort page.

Thanks for hosting this fun interactive site.
Errick

Yes, Harriet. The old gallery loaded quickly on my iphone 4. Now the pictures never load. I've tried many times to load and reload, but just get the old spinning circle.
