Permission to use a photo I know variations of this question has been asked before, but I would still like to get opinions, suggestions, cautions, etc. from this group. I received a request to use a photo by a non-profit group. No payment, just credit for the photo. Of course, I'm flattered. This is the first interest I've ever had for one of my images. However, I'd like to hear from the group before I make a decision - good thing to do, bad thing, etc. Would I need Greg Walker's permission to let them use it, or would that be their burden? Here is the request: Pat, We would like to ask permission to use your photo of Greg Walker (http://www.patharry.com/allen2011/h245AF403#h245af403) on our website. Greg will be appearing at an upcoming fundraiser we're hosting at the Museum of Making Music on August 23, 2013. Could be good, if you think you want to use that as a first step to starting a relationship with the museum. But you hear most photographers say don't ever give anything away. Most come from a guilt trip angle of either damaging the art or taking away work from somebody. But really, people looking for free stuff aren't going to pay much in the first place. And in a case like this, was anybody in much danger of loosing a paying gig in the first place. You can ask them why they haven't used a promo photo from him, which seems odd in a way. It's a news worthy thing, announcing an event, not an endorsement. Plus being a public figure, the museum wouldn't need his permission. If you let them use it, it'll probably may also end up in the local paper if the museum decides to place an ad announcing the event. You can always tell them that whenever somebody wants to use you're editorial stuff you, you charge a one time fee. Nobody with the museum has to know you haven't done it before. Even if it's $20.

Good for you Pat! I just went to the museum's site, saw the home page blurb for Greg Walker's appearance, and when I clicked it, up came an article with your image off to the side, photo credit, and link to your site!
