Professional Print Services

What photo printing service would you recommend? After completing 4 BP courses, I am thrilled with the results and would love to get professional prints of some of my photos--Wal Mart's photo lab is just NOT cutting it!!! Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks! Dorenda Doyle

It's www.mpix.com They also have a facebook page. As a sidenote, I usually have nature and landscape photos printed on the metallic paper - really makes the photo jump out at you. Give them a try, I'm sure you'll be pleased with their work!

Elizabeth never go to a $1.00-2.98 store and expect quality. Walgreens is OK for up to 8x10" but anything larger use MPix or White House Color. And when you get REALLY good then go to Dugall (sp?) in NYC for the best$$$. I am not good enough to justify that one yet. :-(

I don't do a lot of printing, but I've had nice results with Sams Club. In fairness, probably the best way to truely know is to take a favorite photo of yours, and try MPIX, SAMs, WalMart, etc. Then, you'll know. You may find that a 20x30 print at Sams Club for $9.00 is good enough versus spending much more at other sites. Nothing ventured, nothing gained for trying out several print sites.

Excellent point, Ken; I've done trials just like you say in the past---both on prints, and on say, companies that do "publish your own" photo books (like Blurb, MyPublisher, Apple, etc.) Pays to do a little investment and testing initially, to find what you like to stick with going forward. Same thing with testing the various papers (using 1 image for comparison.)

That said, I too have been very happy with mpix.com for printing needs, but was also happy with the photo lab in my local Costco, a few years back---but I let my membership lapse, so I don't know if they still do that service.

Thank you to ALL. Excellent suggestion of taking the same pic to be printed at several locations so that I can compare apples to apples! (Sometimes it's the simple and OBVIOUS solution that eludes us!)
This is the first time I've used this Discussion area, and I am impressed that people take the time to help & appreciative of everyone's input.

I also use MPIX you will love them. I have tried the cheaper places and they don't give you what MPIX will. I sent in some photos that I thought were not the best just to test them out. When I got the photos back they were so much better than I thought possible.I sell sports photos to high school parents and they love the quality, and the speed in which they receive the photos. Send in a couple to try. I also use Zenfolio for my business and MPIX for the lab work both are the best.

Elizabeth, Lynn nailed it for you a few post up before mine. Please stay clear of ANY Costco-Cutco-WallyWorld for "Fine Art" prints. They all provide quantity, not quality. Also they decide so kindly for you what portion of your image they will crop, which is so heartwarming after you deliberately composed and post processed your image.

I have used Automated Photo Technologies for many of my Fine Art print sales. Their website is relatively easy to navigate, upload your files or mail them a disc. Before printing it's best to call them to go over your file (sRGB or AdobeRGB)

Their best product is the 100% cotton 21 mil Entrada rag. Order a small print to sample the color tint. They can help adjust tint to best represent your artwork.

They also offer satin finish 10 mil paper, archival quality. Prints in the 20" range are suspect to curling after mounting if not heat pressed.

First, hello everyone. I am new to BP.

I just was looking at MPix website and I noticed they do color correction. I am still a very green amateur so the color correction is appealing. On the other hand is it "cheating"? Will I get to a point where I don't want colors corrected, thank you?

It is interesting to me because I Had? thought of PS or Lightroom as tools to hide an inability to take good photos, probably due to the negative press about retouched photos. After reading around on this forum I am coming to understand that they are a tool finalizing (developing) our photos. At the same time I realize that the concept of quality in equals quality out probably still applies.

In any case, I am anxious to learn from the forum and the course I signed up for in the hopes of being able to become a meaningful contributor in the future.

I just reread my last post and I must apologize for the typos and spelling errors. Is there a way to edit a post after posting?

Alas, William, no---BP does not have a way for you to re-edit a posting, once you click Submit.

Yup, I use mpix as well, I've never had bad results. I've also done the test of printing the same image at multiple locations. It is really interesting to see the results. If you do this test, I'd suggest that you do it with several images that represent a wide variety of the kind of work you produce. When I did the test, I used a macro flower image, a landscape, and a portrait. The results varied for each image at each location. Check and see if you have any local pro labs. Usually the quality is good and the service can be fantastic.

William - you will get to a point that you won't want them to color correct. You can order a calibration kit from them that will allow you to get your screen output such that it will match prints. Don't be afraid to use PS or Lightroom or any other editing software. And, you are right, the better your images are when you put them into your editing software, the better they will be when they come out.
