Photography Question

Nikon AF Nikor 35 - 105mm f3.5-4.5 Zoom Lens

I am a rookie at photography and have just purchased a Nikon F65 entry level SLR. I have been offered a mint condition Nikon AF 35-105mm f3.5-4.5 zoom lens c/w a Hoya HMC 52mm 1B filter. I was told this is a far superior lens then the 28-80mm bottom end lens that comes with this package. My question is; what would be a good price for this lense in 9+ conditon, and would I find that much difference in quality of picture, compared with the 28-80mm. Thank you, any advice or info would be very much appreciated.

  Robert,
I benchmark the upper end of used equipment pricing by browsing for the specific items I'm looking for at KEH Camera Brokers (Atlanta, GA), B&H Photo Video (NYC) and Adorama (also NYC). KEH is toward the upper end, but their condition grading is very stiff, about one notch higher than others (KEH EX is most others' EX+). B&H also runs toward the upper end with used equipment pricing and their grading is accurate (new items are very competitively priced). Adorama tends to be a little above average. If you buy from a private source (not a store or business) you should pay a slightly lower price. eBay auction closings are all over the map and requires doing a long study over time and making statistical averages . . . along with looking at the standard deviation. I've found it easier to benchmark from store listings, and sometimes use other stores' listings, but the primary ones are KEH, B&H, and Adorama; they're all reputable dealers.

KEH: www.keh.com
B&H: www.bhphotovideo.com
Adorama: www.adorama.com

You are smart to research "fair market value" before buying! I've seen some utterly wacko eBay auctions in which it was obvious two or more bidders were absolutely clueless about the item's "fair market value."

Thank you for your input John, I went to the KEH site as you suggested and I think I am being offered a very good deal, I will be paying around $100.00 less then their price. I also have been watching ebay and you are right - the prices jump around like crazy.
Anyway, thanks again and I am sure that I will have many more questions as I delve deeper into this addiction called photography.

By the way, this site is crammed full of useful info, I don't know where I would be without it.
