flash equipment and teleconverter

I have questions on two different topics:
1- I have sunpak 433D (for canon
AE-1p)flash and want to use off the hot shoe. Sunpak offers an Ext-9 have seen Ext-6 which is correct to use? Are there any third party sync cords which are substitutes and may less expensive to acquire?
2- I have busnell 3x teleconverter on which I mounted varios lenses and have found that I cannot place lens in A position touse program mode. The 3X is marked FD. What could be the problem and do I have to use stopped down metering as with FL lenses if program mode does not work? My 2X works fine under same conditions.

Regarding the teleconverter, I have read that the order you attach it sometimes makes a difference. If I remember correctly, Canon's directions are to mount the TC on the lens first, then attach the combination to the camera. If you put the TC on the body first the mechanism for stopping down the aperture may not work properly.
