Hi ya Casey. I can't speak for BP courses and given your financial situation, they might not be such a great idea for you. As one who's taught a fair amount at the Junior College level and university, I can, however, safely say that courses in photography are well-worth the time and effort and yes, some money as well to cover costs, etc.

I say that because I'm a big fan of the interaction you get in class situations with other students and instructors, and that includes feedback about your work. You're also afforded the opportunity to develop friendships with classmates who have similar interests to your own so there's the socialization factors too. Sharing their work with you, so you can see and hear them critique their own work in addition to yours, is also a good learning experience.

How much you can afford is up to you and your mom, but before you get too far into it, start with looking at local schools in your area, like a JC, even talk to an instructor or attend a class or two (with the instructor's consent) and talk to other students at the break or afterwards. That would give you a lot of insight into their value as well.
Good luck :>))
Mark

  Hello Casey,
I have taken a few courses here at BP and will attest to their being a valued investment. You have a selection of courses about fundamentals, techniques, lighting and several others regarding Photoshop & other software, and at different levels of expertise.

Take Jim Miotke's free course - http://www.betterphoto.com/courseOverview.php?cspID=165

This will give you an idea of how the BP classes work.

I have learned so much from all the classes I have taken and often go back to the lessons to help me remember a technique or photoshop trick that I may have forgotten. The critiques are very advantageous because there are so many things to consider when composing a photo and things like background, harsh lighting & many other things can make or break an image.

I just returned from a Photo tour to Europe with instructor Jim Zuckerman (who I have taken 3 classes with) and it was a great experience to shoot everyday with 11 other photographers and getting on site tips from Jim who is my favorite pro photographer.

Good Luck Casey,
Carlton

  Hi Casey,
Thanks for your interest in BetterPhoto's online photography courses!

The best way to learn about the value of our courses are by those who have taken our courses ... i.e., Carlton (thanks for your input, Carlton!). Actually, I've had teaching experience in both the "brick and mortor" classroom (having taught many university and college courses), as well as years of teaching for BP in the virtual classroom, and am always pleased at the interaction students can have with instructors via the Internet! Plus, there's nothing like the convenience of the online format - lots of flexibility, and none of the traveling and parking "issues" of a college campus :-)

Of course, an online instructor also needs another special skill: writing. So, along with established professional and teaching backgrounds, BetterPhoto's instructors have extensive writing experience too. All have written books and/or articles for photo magazines, so for avid readers of photography-related publications or books, many names on our teaching roster are familiar ones. :-)

Also, check out our testimonials page:

For reviews of specific courses, there's a link oin the testimonials page.

Carlton also made an excellent suggestion about our Free Course Preview.

Thanks again, Casey!
Kerry
