I'm just guessing here, but I think a photography course will prepare you to become a photographer.

Seriously, Linda, if you were a little more specific, you might get a better answer. Even then, the answer is pretty obvious. If you're interested in portrait photography, take a course on portrait photography. If you're interested in macro photography, take a course on it. If you're just starting out and looking for something general, take a basic photography course.

Click on the Course link above, and you will find lots of choices here at BetterPhoto.com.

There is a course calculator that will help you make a course selection. All you do is go to the page and enter some information about your interests and the calculator takes a look through the courses and makes a suggestion based on that.

And if you're asking about what "course" of study to pursue in a formal education program, that depends on a whole additional series of questions.

Generally, however, you should know that professional photography (if that's what you're considering) isn't just about taking pretty photos. In reality, we get paid for solving all sorts of problems from technical including lighting and optical to interpersonal ones among clients, to business-related problems, contractual issues and negotiations, usage agreements, releases, constant creativity problems, oh and train problems.

So, courses that would equip you to better handle those things, among others, are important or even vital to your success in this field.
Take it light ;>)

I think Mark hit the nail on the head if you are referring to photography as a profession.

You need to concentrate on taking a business course (...of course).

It's like when someone asks which camera to buy for underwater photography when they've never dived.

First learn to survive...then learn to thrive.

Linda- Almost every course on BP is aimed at helping you become a better photographer. There's one about starting your own photography business. I took this & was not disappointed. Thanks Vic :) There are so many different specialties in photography. picking one can be very difficult. But, if you do pick a specialty, this does not mean you can't take other images from other specialties. I think the new club area is a great place to start. I personally think this is one of the biggest improvements to the BP site ever. I think it makes the site a lot more personal. I had difficulty maneuvering around the site before, now I just love it! So find a club, or better yet start a club & start communicating by asking questions & even helping others. A big hurrah for the addition of clubs!
