  Rather than give you a lengthy reply here, I refer you to good books by Kodak on basic photography, available at serious camera stores. In a nutshell, use a large aperture (such as f2.8) to throw your background out of focus, and use a small aperture (f16) to have your foreground, subject AND background in focus. Check this site for basics, too.
