Canon A2E vs. Canon Elan 7E

O.K., Jon (and supporting cast). You out there? I am an artist, trying to expand into photography and make my first purchase (NOW!). However, I'm not interested in an entry level unit. I want something that I can grow into. I'd been doing my research and decided on the Canon A2E (even though it's now discontinued). Recently, people have been telling me that the Elan 7E is a better camera. It is quieter, has faster, 7 point eye-controlled focus (it's speed being compared to the EOS 3), etc. However, there are shortcomings when considering shutter speed, film advance, and metering. This is hurting me, now. I'm ready to jump into this and get started. Advice?

  Hi Mike T.,

I guess I'm the resident Canon-ite ;) So far as I know, the A2/A2E is still available, while only the Elan II/IIe was replaced by the Elan 7/7e.

Compared to the Elan 7/7e, the A2/A2E has faster maximum shutter speed (1/8000 v. 1/4000), faster flash sync (1/200 v 1/125), 3.5% spot metering v. 10% partial metering, higher maximum film advance rate (5 fps v. 4 fps), patterned infrared focus assist light, a built-in PC terminal for connecting to studio lights, interchangeable focus screens, and a built-in flash head that zooms from 28mm to 80mm v. 28mm fixed for the Elan.

Some of the advantages of the Elan 7/7e over the A2/A2E are 35 segment matrix metering v. 16 segment, 7 point Eye Control Focus that works both horizontally and vertically v. 5 point horizontal only, advanced E-TTL flash metering v. older A-TTL, FP high speed flash sync to 1/4000 with EX speedlights (N/A on A2/A2e).

The Elan 7/7e cannot be used with infrared film because the frame counter uses an infrared emitter that will fog that film type. It has no effect on tungsten or daylight films of any speed. I don't know whether the A2/A2e is compatible with infrared film.

I'd opt for the Elan 7/7e, unless you must have a particular special feature of the A2/A2E like the interchangeable focus screens, spot metering, PC terminal, or more rugged pro-build body for the type of photography you plan to do.

Actually Jon, the A2E has been discontinued last I heard. The A2 is still in production, but the A2E is gone. I concur with your suggestion to buy the 7E unless you have a compelling reason to spend the $200 difference between the 7E and the A2E. I bought the Elan 7E after the long drawn out thought process of "Elan 7E...no A2E...no Eos 3...no, wait..." I haven't looked back since I got it...Not once have I said "geez I wish I'da bought the EOS 3".

Hi. Now that many e-tailers provide the A2E and the 7E for practically the same price (about $400 for either body), would the A2E be a better camera in an objective, contextless sense? Or is that impossible to answer? Are the manual functions easier to control on either one? And is the A2E significantly more rugged?

Thanks.
