Buying Equipment: Shopping Alert

I ordered a Nikon D70 online yesterday from a national retail giant and requested store pickup. Since some camera boxes aren't sealed and since most stores allow returns, I am always skeptical of getting a used camera. When I arrived at the store and the cashier brought the box to me I requested an inspection before paying. The contents looked undisturbed for the most part, but the cellophane (or plastic) packaging around the lens and camera wasn't "crisp," so I decided on a closer inspection. We removed the lens and camera from the box. The camera had a charged battery in it, and the lens had a scratch right on the glass.
Always inspect your merchandise before paying for your purchase. This has happened before to me with another national chain when I purchased an HP S20 film scanner.

A lot of returns are never checked when accepted. They are just processed and put back on the shelf for another purchase. It's sad that employees don't have the foresight to check and make sure it is salable before they accept it. Good thing you were paying attention!

Last summer my Dad bought a digital camera at Costco. The tape seal seemed undisturbed when he got it. He got it home to find the inside packaging had been messed with. Without even taking the camera out of the box, he repacked what he'd removed and took it back to Costco.

The return desk management happened to be there when my Dad was making his exchange for a fresh box. The guy decided to remove everything from the box to see if anything was missing while the girl paid my Dad back from the till. Nothing was missing from the box. They did though find a patch kit to a blow up rubber boat in the bottom of the box!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ordered an epson printer from adorama and they sent an obviously used or shelf model. It did not have the tapes holding down the moving parts and had some broken pieces, was incredibly dirty and much of it was unwrapped. After some aggravation they accepted it back but I never did get back my shipping costs. I have bought several thousand dollars in equipment since but not one dime was spent at Adorama.
