Sunset photos

I took sunset photos with a 28-200mm Sigma Zoom at the 28mm. The pictures came out with a lot of flare. How can I eliminate the flare? With a polarizing filter? A ND filter?
Thanks.

This type of lens (extremely wide range zoom) is going to be more prone to lens flare because of its many lens groups and elements.

(1) Be sure to use the lens hood. You may also need to improvise additional shading with your free hand, a piece of cardboard, etc.
(2) Stopping down the aperture (smaller aperture/higher "f" number) helps minimize flare though it may still be present. A camera with Depth of Field Preview is very helpful here.
(3) A polarizer may help also reduce flare but unless it is a good multi-coated one it could add to the flare by introducing additional glass surfaces for stray light to bounce off.
(4) Slight changes in your aim/composition can lessen or exacerbate the amount of flare.

I'm not sure whether a Neutral Density filter would help.
