Suggestion

I didn't find a category for suggestions but I have one I would like to post. Please consider making this wonderful site easier for members to get around. Why must we sign in every time we wish to do something? I feel that members should be required to sign in once and then have access to post, change items in their Gallery, comment ect... without having to sign in every single time. It gets frustrating! Please consider changing this. Thanks!

I do hope you get an answer Charlotte, as it does get a bit frustrating.
I asked a question a week ago about the "not so easy" ways of getting around this "very nice" site that BP has, but did not get a single response on it!

While we're being frustrated, let me add a suggestion too..It seems a waste of time to have to go to the read comments page and then if you want to comment, to have to go to another page. Who is just going to read comments?? If you're going there at all, it's because you want to comment. This is especially irritating for those of us who are still on dial up..VERY slow and a big waste of time.

Don't mean to hijack this thread in any way, but here is a part of the question that I posted over a week ago regarding this site and the ease of navigation.
_____

But anyway, I have never visited a photography site to where you have to do so much clicking and scrolling just to make a comment.

I started to go through the finalists to get to those images I had missed.
Right now, I have to make "5 clicks" and "scroll 3 times" just to make a comment!

There is no doubt, that BP has some "wizkids" on hand if they can put together this excellent source for those who wish to learn, but wonder if there is a way to reduce this "chore" of clicking and scrolling to make those comments?

I visit and critique other nature/wildlife photographer's work on different sites, and "almost all" have just a one click option to make a comment.

By no means am I knocking this site in anyway shape or form other than the amount of work involved just to make a comment. Does seem to be a bit to much, and certainly limits my time here at BP because of it!

I'm happy to see other BP members who agree with me.....Now if we could just get everyone else on the band waggon....maybe something would change! ;o) PLEASE MAKE IT EASIER FOR US TO SPEND MORE TIME ON THIS GREAT SITE!

I actually replied to Michael's comments, but not until a couple of days ago. I agree! I would really like better usability on this site because I'd like to get more done in the time I spend here.

In addition to making it easier to comment, I'd like an easier way to change the order of photos in my gallery. It would also be really nice if the photographer's name was included on the list of photos that I've commented on.

I'd also like to know which photos were submitted as entries to the contest and which were submitted just for comments. I wouldn't even mind having the photos submitted to the contest on separate pages from the others.

And, as long as I'm wishing, I'd like to be able to create a list of favorite members. Then, I'd like to be notified when those members have submitted a new photo so that I can keep up with those members even when I don't have time to go through all the submissions each day.

I guess that's enough for now! :-)

Thanks,
Debra

You have some great suggestions Debra....I sure hope someone here at Better Photo is monitoring our wish list. ;o) I'd love to see all of our suggestions applied to this site.

While I'm at it, I'd like to add another wish. Develop a space separate from the contest that can be used for critiquing purposes only. Then members, who wish to get some constructive feedback on their images, would have a place to submit them. ;o)

Thanks,
Charlotte

I'm not seeing the difficulty with any of this. You want to make a comment, click "make a comment". You sign in, on the next page, you're taken to the page to type in your comment.
There's already a way to see just contest entries.
Can't the search button help you find a particular person's photos?
And if anything's slow, it might be your modem.

Here is what I am talking about, ........... and with a high speed modem.

From a thumbnail:
1. Click on thumbnail
2. Scroll
3. Click "Read Photo Discussion"
4. Scroll
5. Click "Respond To This"
6. Scroll
7. Click in box to make comment
8. Click to submit

I have been critiquing images for years on the internet and at many different sites.
This is one heck of a excellent site for the beginners and right on up to the pros.
But no photographic site that I know of on the internet makes a individual take 8 steps to make a simple comment.
Most will give you a 2-3 step option to make a comment.
For some I am sure it would not bother them that much, but I am sure that there are many who would agree that they could spend much more time getting to know other individuals and their work, to learn from them, and to give back to the community if they did not have to spend so much time and effort just to type a few words!

Again, ............ not knocking this site in any way, but it sure does take a whole lot of effort to make a comment and it could be a whole lot simpler!

Another thing we must remember, is that I am sure that the guys & gals who put this site together do keep tabs on comments and suggestions such as what has been stated here.
Let's just remember that they will note it, and if implemented, it will take some time to do so.

I am in no rush, but thought I would kick out some suggestions that may be of some help down the road.

Gregory--You say there is a way to see just the photo contest entries. I'd love to know the trick. The full list, or the lists by category, often show multiple photos from the same member on a given day. I don't know how to filter out the ones that aren't in the contest.

As long as I'm here again, the other easy improvement they could make is to provide better instructions. For example, I'm still not sure what it means to re-submit a photo with the photo ID. Is that a way to update a photo in the same month in which you submitted it? So, you really do have a chance to respond to feedback and submit the same photo twice in a month?

And, what exactly qualifies as a different photo? Say you submit a straight photo one day. Then you alter it drastically with software and want to submit that version. Is that a new photo or do you have to wait until the next month?

I think that making suggestions shows that we really care about this site and want it to be the best it can be. People don't often complain about something that doesn't matter to them. So, thank you Charlotte and Michael for opening the door!

Debra

Can't make everybody happy but complaining about scrolling comes across as whining. You didn't think there could be multiple comments? Seems unavoidable to not have to scroll.
Just click on "see contest entries" if you want to look at the contest entries.

Whining? Well, ............ if you think so!

A community will always come together and always try to make things even better, even if they seem to be great at the moment.

How do you avoid scrolling? Very simple.
Put a place or "tab" that you can click on at the top of the page to make a comment, instead of having to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.
You could easily have a tab at the top and bottom of any given page, giving the "viewer" the option.

No, it is no effort to scroll at all, but when you add all of these up together and you would like to respond to many of the individual's image that you view, it really adds up!

It is simply changes for the better, ............. in my opinion.

A question to Jim M. and crew.

I too (along with Debra), thought about how neat it would be to have something like a "personal bookmark" feature.
I can easily miss many of the images from individuals I would like to keep up with, and a feature such as this sometime in the future would really enhance the member's involvement overall.

Just another thought!

Well, although this was not the original point of this thread, I'm still confused about current contest entries. The list you get when you click "See contest entries" often contains multiple entries on the same day from the same person. Only one photo can be in the contest, so which one is it? See what I mean? Is there some indicator that I'm missing?

Debra

Debra, I thought when you clicked on "our current contest" or "view all entries", every single image that you see is a entry for the contest.
If I had seen multiple entries from one individual, then I would take it that only one (first one submitted that day?) would be considered for the contest.
I may be wrong, but that is the way that I understood it to be.

I have not seen a way of seperating them at all, (contest, non-contest) ............ then again, I am still fairly new here so there may be a way of doing it somewhere, somehow.

If you don't want them in the contest, just don't put them in a category. Simple as that!

Okay, not meaning to make a big deal of this, but I guess I'm not being very clear. So, here's an example.

Let's say that I submit two photos in one day. I do not enter the first photo into the contest, but I do enter the second photo into the contest. How would you know that the second one was a contest entry and that the first one wasn't?

I've seen multiple photos on the contest page from the same member on the same day, and I don't know any way to know which, if any, they submitted into the contest.

Thanks,
debra

  Carolyn is right.
If you do not want it to be entered into the contest, simply select nothing or select "do not enter".

Until someone says anything different, I take it that everything that you see "is entered" into the contest, and with multiple entries by the same person on the same day will result in all being disqualified except for the first one entered by them.

clear and simple. Not seeing the frustration of using the id number either. If it's been uploaded already, just type in the id number where you enter a photo and it tells you to the side, type in the id number.

  hehehe!!!
That was pretty swift George putting a "No Whining" picture up in the contest gallery.

http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGallDetail.php?photoID=442476&catID=560&style=&contestCatID=4

Only problem, was that it was put in the wrong category!

But back on the serious side.
Not a soul here is really complaining or "whining" as you stated.
These are "members" who are coming up with ideas for "possible" changes within the site, and that is all.

I do know, from many years on the internet now, that once some individuals become accustomed to the way certain things flow on a site, that some do not want to see a change. They maybe do not want to learn something all over again. I have been that way myself more than once.
But, ........... this site will change over a period of time. You can't escape that fact!

Actually, many things that have been mentioned so far would not bring about very much change at all, but simply shorten the process here and there and possibly make it easier. It is only suggestions.

I am new here, I like it here, do not want to get on the wrong side with anybody, and I am trying to contribute, ............ not whine!!

I'm OK with all the clicking, scrolling, and sign-ins. My modem is fast, so screens change instantly.

One thing the folks at BP should address seems to be of greater importance. It is possible for D. Web Site owners to upload SOMEONE ELSE'S photos into their Gallery page.
(I discovered this while up-dating my Main Gallery page with new thumbnail photos. I transposed two digits of the ID number by mistake, and someone else's photo popped up as a Gallery thumbnail.)

There should be a safeguard installed to prevent this from occurring.

I wonder if a member ID number could be used, then followed by the image ID number?
Ex: 12345-77477

I can see where that could easily happen, and something that they could take a look at.
I usually copy and paste the number in there, so there is little chance of typing it in wrong, but still, it could easily happen for anyone.

That is a great one Bob, and thanks for posting it!

Now that's a good suggestion, eventhough I do realize that part of the angle for this whole thing is that it's a bargain, now frills type of set up. So I do expect some things to be based on an honor system.
