Number of finalist photos per entrant. I feel that a single photographer having 13 "finalist" photos in one contest is a little out of balance. Obviously not the photographers fault, and obviously the photographer entered high quality images, but I would think there would be a limit to the number of photos a single entrant could have chosen by the judges to make the "finalist" list. Again, not a jab at any photographers, and I'm proud to be a finalist myself, just questioning the system. Thank you, Rob, "happy to have a place like Betterphoto".

The following quote from an earlier answered question is where I got the idea that the number of images from one entrant were narrowed down to only the "best work by each individual photographer". I'm sorry if I read it wrong, and have brought something up here that I shouldn't have. "There are usually between 7 to 10 judges, all of whom are professional photographers. You're right - it is an enormous job, taking several days and consisting of several rounds. First, images are chosen for technical merit - any unintentionally blurry and poorly exposed images are eliminated in the first round. Then we do what we call a "double checker" round, to make sure no potential winners are missed during the first round. Then images are grouped by member and then by category to make sure that only the best work by each individual photographer and only images that were properly categorized make it to the next round. Judge's scores are then tallied in a mathematical process, in order to keep the contest as democratic and non-subjective as possible. To answer you final question, the judges usually refrain from commenting on photos during the judging. If they did, they would see the name of the member who made the photo. We don't want the judges to know who shot what - we want the images to be judged purely on their own, without considerations regarding the photographer. In an effort to keep things fair, the judges do not see the member's name or other personal information while judging. © Jim Miotke

Looks to me by the quoted info that the photos are judged anonymously, so it would be hard to put a cap on any one member getting finalists. I made the finals and was so excited to make six images. That made my day...heck my week:-) Other months though I only got one or two. I think if someone got 13 photos to the finals, good for them! That shows they are shooting high quality work! Doesn't seem fair to "penalize" them by putting a limit on things. And it motivates me to try and reach that quality and consistency of work:-) Whoever had them, Way to go! As far as the rest of it, it might be a moot point in a couple of weeks with the contest changing anyway...

It's nice if you are the person who gets 13..I'm just inspired to try harder to catch up...Not that THAT'S gonna happen!

I couldn't disagree more with the notion of watering down a competition. I have had the honor of winning a couple second place awards. Those awards mean something to me. I won them against the best photos offered by the best photographers. I don't want a quota system or for someone to be disadvantaged just because they work hard and do great work. I don't want their standards lowered to my level. I want my standards raised to theirs! As Joe Paterno so aptly remarked: I want my dish to taste good. bill

how about dividing into 2 categories.... film photos and digital photos, then divide up into categories? Maybe that would help a little... just a suggestion As far as limiting the amount of finalists one person can have... I am not sure about that. Not making the finals may motivate one person to try harder and another person to throw in the towel... we all operate on different levels of motivation. Angie Angie

I totally agree with Jan, Bill and Carolyn. Hey, if someone had 13 photos that were great, he or she deserves it. The contest is supposed to be judging individual photos, not photographers. And when your photos make the finals, it makes it that much sweeter because you know your photo was one of the best for the month (not one of the best, after throwing out several from the top photographers to prevent someone from having too many finalists...or a "watered down" recognition).

I agree with the comments before, that a watered down version to limit someone from winning what they deserve wouldn't be fair. If it truly is anonymous and they can't see the photographer's name then there would be no way to stop that from happening. If the work is being judged soley on the work itself, someone producing outstanding work would and should be able to win accordingly! That's my two cents worth!

Either the complaining worked, or they just needed a new way of doing things. But now it's a 10 per person per month limit on the contest. And they added a monthly theme. We'll see if not fitting into the theme causes any displeasure.

I dont think all of the photos that you enter have to be theme related. Am I correct in my thinking??? It could be that they may give a special prize t the best of the theme for the month.

No, the theme is all by itself and all photos submitted do not have to be theme related. Mike

The issue of the judging being anonymous makes me wonder about those who put their names on their photos. I was doing that, but have recently stopped as I noticed that most of the past winners did not have their names on their photos. If your name is on them, you obviously are not anonymous to the judges. Right?
|
|
|
||
Michael Brown |
I thought about that also Janet, but still, there is no way that I would "ever" submit them without my copyright on them.

I completely understand that and am not comfortable submitting mine without my name as there is no safeguard on this site preventing people from taking the photo(for the thumbnail, at least). Something needs to be done about that to protect us and so the contest can be completely anonymous.

If someone has 13 of the best ... good for them ! As far as names on work, I figure if they can lift your photo they won't have much trouble removing your name in an editing program ;>)
|
|
|
||
Michael Brown |
True, ............. a editing program will allow you to easily crop the name out or you can even use the clone tool to get it out. But still, how easy is it for you to prove "intent" in a courtroom without your name on it? Will the court take "your word" that intent was involved? They will simply say, ............ "prove it!" My opinion is still this: Put your name on the photo if putting it on the internet, and spend the $30 to register a collection or body of work with the US Copyright Office. Well worth it! Again, ....... just my opinion,

Personally I think we should all stop whinning! This is a free contest! I think getting to submit even one photo is pretty lucky on our part. I Love to take pictures and I am totally excited that I can enter pictures and not only get judged on them but people let me know what they think about them...to me that is the biggest prize of all. When I add another picture I always look at the other entries and every time I see awsome shots that make my little shots look like snap shots but, this is what makes me better. I may or may not win this contest ever I am only starting. I have gotten some really nice feed back on some of my shots but I have to face reality that some of these people have been shooting for a long time... they should be better than I am...sometimes I see shots entered that are not as good as mine or so I think but then again they may beat mine..so be it. If you are getting mad because someone else wins more than you maybe you shouldn't enter or face it maybe you just aren't that good. Use this site to get better and to learn not to get pissy. Thank you BETTER PHOTO for this site just the way it is! Heck I might win all or nothing... but I will be back. Say Cheese!!

You are right Tina. I have decided to face it; I'm just not that good. But I'll keep trying to come up with 30 good pictures per month to enter. Cheese!

Oh for crying out loud!!!!!!When I said YOU MIGHT NOT BE THAT GOOD I meant ANYONE who entered the contest that didn't win... might not have entered the best pictures in that months contest. I wasn't just responding to ROB. And for heavens sake I am in no position to decide if anyone is good or not... I never even looked at ROBs photos yet. I wasn't writting based on that... Maybe I will look at them and be convenced that ROB RULES ALL and that we should simply end all PHOTO contest because he should win them all!!! All in all...it is FREE people!!!!!!!!!!! Let's just have fun!

Tina, We are having fun. Well, I am anyway. I know you weren't aiming any comments at me. I was just moved to smile when I saw your "you might not be that good" statement. Also, I think your use of the word "pissy" may have contributed to my sarcasm. No need to get too excited about all of this. I surely don't "RULE ALL", nor do I expect to win anything every month. My original post was based on incorrect information that I had rolling around in my brain. I thought there were limits, and I was surely wrong. And all is fine here, and I hope you can know that I say "cheese" with a smile. Rob
