I've LONG been a huge fan of the work of BP member, Kitty Kono. Her wildlife photography is STELLAR (IMHO) and I practically drool when I view her images.
---
So last week I contacted Kitty and asked if it would be possible for me (and two photo club friends ) to meet up with and shadow her on one of her shoots at Valley Forge National Park.
----
She graciously and enthusiastically said that she would LOVE to show us around her "spots."
----
Yesterday was the day...and WHAT a day it was to be!

Kitty--Thank you SO MUCH for the education and your patience and GREAT humor. Though we were soaked to the skin, had soggy socks, and were digging gnats out of our ears and other facial orifices, we had a ball and came home with new appreciation for the skills, patience, and passion of the intrepid wildlife photographers that you personify.

This is Kitty after several hours of trekking through a soggy tangle of brambles, tough terrain (all uphill!), streams to ford (Kitty easily jumped from bank to bank with all her gear in hand) rain, thick clouds of gnats, and noisy "students." She could have gone another few hours--NO PROBLEM!
----
When asked how she is able to get close enough to the animals to capture the portrayals that she does, she offered the following: "Sit quietly and just wait for the wildlife to come out and play!" and (my favorite) "I just try to pretend I'm a DEER!"

Silent Intensity on the hunt
How the heck does she shlepp this stuff around so easily? She never tripped on knotty brambles; she never once bumped into anyone with her tripod legs.

Where's the Fox, Kitty?

The baby fox Kitty had spotted asleep on a dirt mound was SO FAR AWAY, that it took about ten minutes for us to land our eyes on him. Eventually, with our 400mm zoom lenses (NOT the lenses that work best for wildlife captures), we each came home with "Proof of Fox" shots. Kitty was very VERY patient with us.

What a fabulous day that must have been!! Took the opportunity to visit Kitty's BP Gallery. In addition to her outstanding photographs I was struck by the absence of EPs and Finalists. A clear indictment of BP's judging IMHO!!
