I need some feedback with this one. I cannot decide which is better, the black and white or the color version. She really had attitude. She is the same one with the "Bad Hair Day". Here is the color version.

Hi Debbie. I marginally prefer the B&W, but it could use some more work on it. There is more detail in the hair showing on the color version so I would like to see that replicated on the B&W version. Which conversion did you use?

I love the B&W because it emphasizes her atttude. The color version holds it own, as well, but it has features that surpass the attitude.

Peter is tough! I don't mind the lesser details in the B&W because it serves as a sort of vignette and keeps the focus on that face.

Susan is right! There is a kind of vignette effect on the B&W which keeps one's attention on the face.

I love the pose and the composition. I think I like the black and white better, but mostly because the color version looks WAY too much like my first boss!

For me, the B/W is the best. I really like it as it is. Very beautiful job Debbie!

I am leaning toward the black and white because it really does have that haughty fashion look to it. Not that I can shoot models --just orangutans...I still like the color version. Think I will enter both this month or did any of you understand the new rules to not allow different versions?

Good to hear from you, Michelle. I have always admired your work.

Peter, I hardly had to do anything after the conversion because I know there was a lot of contrast in her color version. I may have tweeked in a bit more contrast but not much had to be done.

For me, definitely the black and white. I think if that shot had a soundtrack, the orangutan would be about to sing a jazz standard.

what a wonder capture of her. they are so fun to watch for the most part. I so would love to go to the zoo I have been so busy I can't think straight and two more people called me today...

its really a hard call for me. I really don't like one better than other. can't go wrong. between all the changes in the rules and being busy I have only entered 4 or 5 pictures in the three months.

Lisa - that's funny about the jazz soundtrack. She kind of made me think of Gypsy Rose Lee, the stripper! I kept hearing, "Let me entertain you". I have another one of her with her baby which I love and may post next.

Rita -- When we leave on this next trip I will call you if I have cell phone coverage in the Tetons. I am getting discouraged by what's going on in the contest. In June EP's were generous and in July, I only got three. And then I noticed that I had a couple in August but it almost looks like they haven't finished with July. I am about ready to give up.

So glad you are doing so well with your portrait work. That is exciting!! Our local photo group hosted a six hour session in Denver with Hanson Fong, a noted wedding and group portrait photographer. It was a fascinating session and well worth the money even though I don't do his kind of work. I just feel like I am going backwards instead of forwards in BP and am in a rut.

Debbie, I have a feeling there are different Editors for July and August, and July is way behind and August is on top of the game.

Susan, Interesting...that would explain why August has started and July is only about a quarter of the way into the month.

I'm late coming to this, Debbie, and that is good since my opinion is opposite.

The B&W conversion is excellent and all the comments are true. B&W is a stronger medium for communicating mood. The natural vignetting frames. The conversion works for your intent.

But just comparing the pictures side by side, I prefer the color. It just holds a lot more interest for me. The color combinations are excellent (there is something a little odd going on with the reds in the background) and lighting wonderful. There is attitude expressed in the color versions, it just isn't "attitude"

I am responding off the side of the road from the Grand Teton range. -- for two reasons First There is no Internet at the campsite and no cell phone and as only it just started hailing. Coming out of Jackson Hole so we will soon be out of cell service. Because of the lousy coverage I will be out of the loop for we dal days at a time. Got to to tell you Stephen, I am totally blown out of the water by what I am seeing in my LCD on the NEX7. Am also blown away by these mountains.

Glad to hear you like it. I like mine too. It has put me in a bind since for much of my photography its image quality matches and possibly surpasses my 5DMII. But when I start working the RAW images on my desktop, I start to realize how much the quality of a camera's JPG engine and its LCD can color first impressions.

Lens quality will make as much difference on the NEX-7 as it does on the 5DMII.

I know this is way late to make any difference but despite my general preference for color I prefer the B&W on this one. It is a very strong shot regardless of which you pick.

As far as the contest, I don’t care very much. I have never entered many shots per month anyway and just consider it an additional fun part of BP. I don’t like the recent announcement that they are going to give weight to favorite picks because that seems to make it into a popularity contest.

Is this your first time to the Tetons? They really do blow you away the first time you see them and after seeing them a number of times in my life that feeling is not diminished.

Just got back into Colorado and turned on my cell phone for the first time in a week. Thank you for all your comments. The interstate is bumpy so forgive any typos.

Yes, Michael -- this is the first trip to the Tetons. . That first glance of that magnificent mountain range after leaving Jackson made Pikes peak look like a hillside! Your comment on the contest clinches it for me. I have always steered away from photo contests that are "popular vote " based. I may enter every so often but will never expect any EP's from now on. But I understand the reason behind it. Popular vote won't cost nearly as much in terms of both time and compensation to judges. On the other hand, the devaluation of the "awarded" images will be great and the. " best photo contest" on the Internet will be no more. Too bad -- but inevitable. The best thing about BP remains the the Clubs -- in particular, our Phellos.

Agreed! All of your opinions mean more to me than an EP at this point. Although I admit is is nice when they come, however rare it is for me now... Ok, pity party over.
