Here's the original RAW capture.
I generally feel like a B/W conversion is a drawn out game of "what if" for me... Lots of exploration, trial and error, etc. But I came up with this result relatively quickly (by my standards!) and really like it a lot... which makes me doubt it, ironically!

Have you read or taken Rob Sheppard's blogs/class on b&w conversions on BP? If not, you might want to review that and evaluate this conversion in that context. In his mind its all about contrast in tone and texture.

I think you've done a great job on both counts. In particular, the you've really managed to bring the tree root out and separated it from the wall behind.

Yeah, this really looks nice. I agree with Rita that square was a good move for this.

I like this B&W the best, Christopher. The details are wonderful. I'm a big fan of The Nik software. It's good stuff!

Thank you all very much; I'm glad my instincts weren't off the mark this time around. I ever-so-lightly darkened the "underside" of the overhanging right wall, and entered today. Thanks again!
Off to Starbucks, where I will hopefully find a comfy seat and can start sifting through some club photos today!

I think you did a good job on the conversion and the Black and White works great on this one.

Thank you, Beth. I'm pretty happy with this one, especially as the trek through Wire Pass was the "low point" of the entire trip; just a miserable hike, really. So to find that I have another "keeper" from that ordeal is a nice consolation ;)
