I have done portrait work and this is definitely a keeper. The pose and framing both work for me.

you really did a great job Kristin. very nice pose and framing. the only thing is its a little tight at her elbow... I think one thing you have to remember, is portraits get put in frames and this one would mean her elbow would be missing some in the frame. I don't know if this is your full frame on crop. But just remember when you are taking them to leave the room all around her, hope this makes sense. Really is a lovely portrait for not being your thing. great job!

Kristin, this is marvelous. Beautiful lighting, nice pose, lovely expression and all around excellent portrait.

Rita brought up a good point and there are other issues you might address. If this image is cropped and you have more space than the issues will be easy to correct.

I'd suggest that you rotate it a bit so that the eyes are lined up vertically. This will eliminate the slightly awkward look of her leaning to far and looking backward. The rotation will also take care of the elbow problem because it will then be lower.

The other issue is a bit more involved and that is the very hard crease in her neck and shoulder area cause by the raised arm. I know it is a natural fold but it is unflattering and can be corrected.

I'll send you an email with a sample of what it would look like changed.

PS: another clue that it could use rotation is the fact that the ear ring would hang straight up and down if it was shot at that angle.

Thank you for your input. I shot close to 200 frames last night and this was the only one that came close to looking good. I predict a steep learning curve in my near future!

I think this is great Kristin! As a newer portrait photographer one of my challenges is being creative with posing, yet keeping it natural and flattering all at the same time.
I'm glad you've had the patience to take this on with studio lighting. I'm sure it will all be worth it in the end!
I hope to take this on myself someday!

I think this looks great. I don't take people pictures well at all. Where and what kind of class are you taking? Sounds like fun!

Kristin it does not look to me like you need a lot of help. Great lighting and pose. The few issues I see have been addressed except that Dale mentions the crease in her neck while I also see the bottom of her earring lying beside her neck as also being a bit of a problem. A simple clone can fix that.

This looks great,Kristin! Such lovely clarity. I do agree about the tight frame but that can be fixed with your next subject. Just zoom out a bit more. Good for you on tackling this part of photography that doesn't appear to be my thing.

For a portrait like this Kristin how much were you left to set it up yourself or was it the teacher that arranged the lighting etc?
I bow to our friends suggestions but all I see is a very pretty girl beautifully shot.

The instructor brought in the lighting Peter...and the young lady modelling has been at it for several years. we basically helped him set up and shot! Setting up a studio would be a costly venture!
