Nice backlit photo Betsy. This meets the assignment. I like the contrast of red leaves against the green color, found in the background leaves and on various branches. The green on the branches lead the viewer's eye from branch to branch because they are slightly illuminated and keep the viewer's eye from leaving the frame. The darker branches have a dramatic effect not only by their value contrast, but also by the interesting shapes and contours they create. Details on the foreground branch show some details. There are crisp edges on the main larger tree branch that separate it from the leaves behind it - shows depth and a 3-D effect. The composition is very good - you positioned the heavier massive branch in the lower thirds and the lighter, thinner branches and limbs in the above thirds (it's a more natural placement to have the heavier objects on the lower thirds). The blue sky is pleasing to the viewer's eye, rather than no color at all.

The color and brightness of the leaves can be slightly enhanced by capturing a little more back lighting. The contrast will be more dramatic.

This photo was taken in partial shade and by finding the right angle, it's possible to highlight the colorful leaves. Just walking around and looking for the right angles, is better than adjusting and moving your camera. As you can see by the examples 1 & 2, you don't need to have all the leaves enhanced.
