Tonight's "Hunter Moon" rises over southwest D.C. The striking reddish/orange hue of a full moon seen near the horizon is an artifact of Earth's atmosphere. When you see the moon close to the horizon, the sightline to the moon passes through more atmosphere, vs. later when the moon is viewed overhead. Blue light is scattered more effectively (passing through that thicker atmosphere to reach your eyes), while red light is not. (I did nothing during my editing to alter the red coloring that was captured by the RAW image.)
