Gord, I think you nailed it on the head. This is one of two gibbons at Auckland Zoo. One of the two got put to sleep this week because he has been depressed for 11 years. Auckland Zoo have done everything they could to help him but to no avail. He did not bond with his mate. He would call out a constantly which is a sign of a depressed and sad gibbon. He was abandoned by his mother at birth and brought up by humans so he could neither identify as a gibbon or as a human, he just didn't fit in and for that reason was not able to be sent to another zoo and unable to be sent to the wild because he would not survive. Auckland Zoo have received a lot of criticism over their decision but it was done with the gibbon's welfare at heart. Sad eh! They are now bringing in another gibbon from a zoo in our city to hopefully bond with the female gibbon that is now on its own.

Hi Ann, that's a heartbreaking story indeed. I like going to zoos but I often question if it is good to put animals in zoos or not. We have a place in southern Ontario here where its made up of many acres, and sections. The animals basically run free, at least more freedom than cages. Bottom line that poor little guy sure has a depressed look on his face.
