I feel that saying something like, I have always loved taking photos, is so cliche, because none of us who really love photography, EVER started by hating taking photos. Still...I have always loved taking photos.
I my started serious photography journey quite by accident when, while finishing my Master's Degree in Social Work, at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. I started borrowing some of the point and shoot cameras from the IT department to take photos of conferences, seminar, workshops and other events, including the annual Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies Powwow.
One of the requirements of borrowing and using the school's camera was, that none of the images I took belonged to me, they were the property of the Brown School, to be used as the IT department and the school saw fit.
I was amazed the first time I saw one of my photos used in a school recruitment informational brochure. When I saw some of them appear on the website, I was in complete shock.
But, what really sealed it for me was one day when I was in the IT department having the photos I had just shot, downloaded off the 2GB card, so that I could go back and take more. The man who had been working on it, (Mark Glenshaw, thank you is just never going to cover my gratitude for your changing my life with just a few words) looked at me and said, "You're really good at this, you should think about becoming a photographer", I was hooked!
I completed my Master's Degree in Social Work, and even tried my hand at working in the field, but, when my husband bought me my first DSLR camera, that was it...I never looked back!
