I have always had an interest in photography, but didn't want to spend the money to buy all the photo equipment nor spend hours in a dark room. I was thrilled when digital photography became fairly inexpensive and was capable of capturing high quality images. Having been a computer geek for the majority of my life, digital was the way to go.
I bought a Minolta Dimage 7 with a 5.2 Mb capability. Thanks to the ability to take a picture and immediately view the results, I quickly learned the basics. I practiced on flowers and bugs in my mom's lush gardens as well as family members during special events (and some not so special). While volunteering for some hang gliding meets in Florida, I took advantage of all the action to practice my shooting skills. I ended up with over 2,000 images. From those images, I earned several spotlight photo layouts in the US Hang Gliding magazine.
Since then I have been studying different books on photography and continuing to practice. Learning Photoshop CS has been one of the greatest assets to getting the most out of my digital images. I try to shoot in RAW format when possible. You never know when that image might need to be published. RAW lets me tweak the settings to really maximize the impact of the image. But no matter how powerful the software, if you don't get a good shot to begin with, you aren't going to be able to do much with it.
