Description

Melanerpes carolinus like to eat a variety of foods, including (but not limited to) acorns, pecans, beechnuts, hazelnuts, corn, tree sap, lizards, caterpillars, insects, fruits, berries, and seeds! They will visit hummingbird feeders for nectar. They will consume oranges put out for orioles. Special preference is a mixture rich in sunflowers, nuts, and corn.

F5.6@1/800 second, ISO 1600, partial metering
Focal length: 420.0 mm (300.0 mm f4L+1:4 extender)
Used bathroom window as a blind; placed an Eastman-Kodak 18% gray card above this feeder to check for both custom white balance and light. This reduces headaches when detail is needed in highlights and shadows.
Tripod with 8 lb ballast (one gallon water) down center.

Beautiful photo of this woodpecker Bunny and the use of the gray card I will have to try that one myself. the detail and color are just beautiful. #1255616

I cannot find middle gray just by looking at a scene. But, using an 18% gray card and adjusting ever so slightly basically reduces my efforts in Photoshop. What's even nicer, is that the "expensive" real 18% gray cards come two and a half to a package. I use the large on one the bird feeder, but the small one will fit in the palm of your hand. Once you calibrate your hand to the gray card (assuming your memory is better than mine), you can use the adjustments simply for your hand and eliminate the gray card.

I love the actual capture of creating an image, Nikki. I can hardly wait until the temperatures drop into the 70's and 80's, so I can open the window and again capture the birds or coons. And, get out and do some photography wherever I'm able to walk.

Your comments are always personal and so appreciated. Thank you, Nikki. #8860754
