I set it up and waited for action to take place. Since I cannot walk very well, I've found that I can capture the most action from our bathroom window.
And, from experience, I know that:
1) Birds become thirsty after feeding;
2) Birds like moving water, and these were both thirsty and dirty from the cold winter. So, the first warm day, I moved the watering stand to a place within direct view of my bathroom window and turned the water on using the finest spray (as to spray water all over, but so not much would be wasted).
3) Then, I went inside, set up my tripod, placed my camera with my longest lens combo on top, opened the sash of the window, and waited. I checked occasionally, even fetched a ballast for the tripod --a one gallon container of water, which I secured with the strap down the center on the tripod.
4. Re-focusing on the sprinkler with everything ready, with my remote attached to the camera and the lens manually focused on the sprinkler head, it was just a matter of the bird coming in. Eventually that occurred and voila!
