"Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial School"

Uploaded: March 11, 2010

Description

3/11 T&P
One of the most historically significant and controversial buildings in my town of Mt. Pleasant, MI is the "Indian Industrial School". It closed almost eighty years ago, but still generates emotional responses from both the native and non-native residents in the area. If you look carefully, you can see one of the many "keep out" signs on the tree to the left (I took the shot from a public roadway) and a Michigan Historical Marker on the building that you couldn't possibly read from the road. These contradictory signs seem to sum up local attitudes toward the property. Concerning the photo - I was trying to replicate the feel of the 1920s photographs I have seen of the school.
