Over the Brazos: Waco Texas
Uploaded: February 13, 2010
-------
Waco’s Historic Suspension Bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge west of the Mississippi when it was completed in 1870. The bridge was built with cable supplied by the John Roebling Company, builder of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Crucial to traders and travelers for well over a century, the bridge (supporting foot traffic only) stands as an icon of Waco history and is the centerpiece of many community festivals and events including the "4th on the Brazos" celebration and Brazos Nights concerts.
The bridge is flanked by two interesting Waco parks — Indian Spring Park on the west side, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on the east side.
------------
On the bottom left can be seen the central feature of the MLK Park.

The comp is simply superb here, Michelle. I'm amazed at the detail you have front to back from the beginning of the sweep of the bridge to the distant trees and sky. The inclusion of the mural element and the two figures gazing at it is perfect. #8379216Reynaldo D. Reyes February 13, 2010

Fantastic capture, Michelle. Great detail, com and texture. #8379998Laura E. Swan February 13, 2010
Wonderful Image, Michelle. It's so interesting. The right side draws and stretches our eye down the long span of the people walk, while the left side fixes a 'stopped focus' on the parks artistic center piece at the rivers edge. Is that Martin Luther's famous speech in D.C.?Love the history here, too, as always!
!!! HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO YOU AND YOURS, MICHELLE !!!

Great photo! As noted by others, the POV was very well chosen and we also liked the brief historical lesson."Brazos" is the spanish word for "arms" (the arm of person or even the arm of a river). Is there a connection? #8404788
adrifil February 21, 2010
Spanish and portuguese language share the same origin (the latin) and many words are similar. Texas was mexican (and a spanish colony before that), that's why we thought that "Brazos" could mean "arms". In portuguese is "braços" (the "ç" I read like "ss")John Rivera February 23, 2010
Beautiful Perspective Michelle! #8409160Daniella Puente March 01, 2010
