Under other circumstances, the evening would have been perfect. He brought her roses, even though she knew they could not afford them. They spent the night looking at pictures of places and things she dreamed of seeing, but knew she never would. They talked, they cried, they loved. He kissed her softly and whispered goodbye at 10 past 6. The train would take him to the boat and the boat would take him across the ocean. The boat would take him to war. But for her, time stood still.
