Grandview Storm

Uploaded: November 16, 2009

Description

Grandview National Park/New River Gorge National River, Beckley, West Virginia.

Manual, F/8, 1/400,ISO of 800 and a Moose Circular Polarizer, I'll be honest I have no idea what part of the sky was spot metered for this exposure. Is "Lucky Shot" a metering mode?

This had to be one of the most difficult scenes I have ever tried to photograph, it was stormy and cold and I stopped here on a whim not knowing what we would get. As we got to the overlook, the sun started breaking through in the upper right and sun rays began beaming down from beneath the dark clouds lighting up the river below...

Exif: F Number: 8, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/400 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 800, FocalLength: 24.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 5D

WOW!What an awesome perspective and view...and this is an awesome photograph of it. Excellent composition with the river angling through the frame with the trees and hills on either side. Those clouds are magnificent...and no doubt combined with the clouds, the lighting creates a definite moodiness. Lucky shot? OK, if you say so...but great work as always. #1205917

Beautiful shot. I echo Jack, maybe lucky, but you were there with camera ready as the sun broke. #8137239

Your photo gives this place its name, Amanda, and there really is no such thing as luck. I can see this would be an extremely difficult exposure with the bright light coming through the upper right and the almost total darkness in the lower left, but the camera was in the right hands that day. Lucky us. Your composition is, as always, flawless, with the s-curves of the river leading us from darkness to light, and you managed some interesting elements like the fog-like patches of clouds and the hint of color coming with the light. A Grand View that most of us would have rendered as darkness with a silver streak. #8139062

Well my friend for being Johnny come lately, leaves little to add to the wonderful comments already written. I have always favored whim, candid or any other instantaneous shots, they are the ones that were inspired by the heart, you certainly accomplished that extremely well with this one my friend. #8162278
