Stilted

Uploaded: June 02, 2005

Description

This female Black-necked Stilt plays out her hoax of injury, as she lures me away from her nest. I've discovered several Stilt nests around the saltwater estuary on Punta Banda, near Ensenada, MX in Baja CA. I keep my distance once I notice this tell-tale behavior.

Great capture, thanks for adding the interesting description too!
All I could think when I saw the thumbnail, is "awww look at the poor bird, and that must hurt" But as I read it is clear the bird is just drawing you away and keeping her nest safe. Very nice clear shot! #257302

...really nice capture Douglas...very well done with the focus and colors...am always amazed at how close the females and males look, with the darker male backs...I ESPECIALLY appreciate your ethics and telling people that you backed off once you realized that she did this because she had a nest to protect...nice work all the way around... #1422748

Thanks very much, Susan, Robert, and Greg. I appreciate your time and kind comments. These Stilts are the predominant bird when photographing the estuary. They are probably the least timid, usually approaching to within 8 ft as they feed. Good luck to all of you! #1436275
