Description

Perhaps the best-known Hindu festival, Diwali marks the end of the year and the beginning of a new season. It is celebrated throughout India, as well as all Indian communities the world over. Based on the astrological calendar it usually falls in late October/ early November and is the welcoming of Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after a 14 year exile, during which he rescues his wife Sita and defeats the evil Lord Ravana, marking the reign of good over evil.

An occasion of joy for all, homes are spring-cleaned, painted and decorated; new clothes worn, business and new ventures begun and sweets exchanged. Oil lamps are lit in jubilation even in the humblest of huts.

Celebrated for five continuous days, each with its own significance, Diwali draws inspiration from many Hindu legends, beliefs and myths.
